Sheila McGinn wonders why I "put Galatians after the 'prison letters'
rather than before them?"
There are two periods of imprisonment in the sequence I assembled:
one in Ephesus reflected in 2 Cor. 1:8ff and one at the end of Paul's
career as reflected in Col/Phlm (and "Eph"). That much seems to be
indicated by the letters themselves. Further, the similarity of Romans
to Galatians is striking.
Among those who depend on Acts to determine Paul's career Adolf
Deissmann suggested years ago to G. S. Duncan that he should look into
the possibility of an Ephesian imprisonment for Paul. Acts describes a
riot in Ephesus but nothing further. The result was his book of the
same name, and the idea has considerable support among scholars.
Further a number of scholars have followed Lohmeyer in separating
Philippians from the other "imprisonment epistles" and placing it
earlier than the other three. The differences are striking.
Thanks for the response! -- John Hurd
