Citizen Architect: Samuel Mockbee and the Spirit of the Rural Studio
documentary film screening and panel discussion on design/build architecture
Wed. November 16, 7:00pm
ETC Auditorium (at the Corner of Maryland Ave. and Club Blvd.)
NC School of Science and Math, Durham
Free and Open to the Public

Citizen Architect documents the work of the Rural Studio at Auburn University. Founded by Samuel Mockbee in 1993, the Rural Studio engages architecture students to design and build structures for the residents of impoverished Hale County, AL. Using hay bales, old tires, donated carpet tiles and other unorthodox materials, the studio has produced award-winning houses and community buildings. Their work is the subject of the book, An Architecture of Decency, and has been featured in the NY Times, Washington Post, and Dwell magazine.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion on design/build architecture.

TOMORROW! (FRI NOV 11)
Rebecca Hill, author of
Men, Mobs and Law: Anti-Lynching and Labor Defense in Radical US History
will be here to discuss her new book! In it, Hill compares two seemingly
unrelated types of leftist protest campaigns: those intended to defend
labor organizers from prosecution and those seeking to memorialize
lynching victims and stop the practice of lynching. Arguing that these
forms of protest are related and have substantially influenced one
another, Hill points out that both worked to build alliances through
appeals to public opinion in the media, by defining the American state
as a force of terror, and by creating a heroic identity for their
movements.
