Shirlette (http://www.stumphole.com)
Big Freedia & the Divas with Rusty Lazer (http://www.bigfreedia.com/)
DJ Chocolate Thunder
The Casbah, Durham
Big Freedia is the 2nd titan of New Orleans Bounce music to pass through
the Triangle this fall (did anyone go to see Vockah Redu at Kings last
month?). This show is presented by Duke Performances. It's probably easier
for you to go watch some videos <http://bigfreedia.com/videos.php> than for
me to try to explain.
Friday, November 11
Chuck Johnson
Ezekiel Graves (http://www.myspace.com/ezekielgraves)
All Day Records, Carrboro
Former Triangle resident, Spatula guitarist & Ivanovich/Pykrete noisemaker
Chuck Johnson stops in for a solo set with still-local compatriot Zeke
Graves.
Friday, November 11
Bowerbirds (http://www.bowerbirds.org)
Megafaun (http://www.myspace.com/megafaun)
Haw River Ballroom, Saxapahaw
The lovely Haw River Ballroom in the bucolic mill/river town of Saxapahaw
is almost certainly the best place in North Carolina to catch these two
bands. If only there were light rail between here & there.
Friday, November 11
Brand New Life (http://www.myspace.com/thebrandnewlife)
Tree City (http://www.myspace.com/treecity919)
Chit Nasty (
http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Chit-Nasty-Band/234464313258171)
Toon (http://www.reverbnation.com/toon)
The Pinhook, Durham
Friday, November 11
Mandolin Orange (http://www.myspace.com/mandolinorange)
Josh Oliver
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh
This is an album-release party for the new Mandolin Orange double-album,
which is actually probably short enough to fit onto a single CD (albeit
just barely) but which resulted from two different sessions with two
different lineups, one more in an electric vein & the other their more
trad/stripped-down acoustic sound.
Friday, November 11
The Protomen (http://www.myspace.com/theprotomen)
I Fight Dragons (http://www.ifightdragons.com/)
Motorco Music Hall, Durham
Friday, November 11

)
Boolow
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
Saturday, November 12
Future Kings of Nowhere (http://www.thefuturekings.net/)
Bombadil (http://www.bombadilmusic.com/)
Jason Kutchma (http://jkutchma.bandcamp.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
This is the CD-release for the long-awaited new Bombadil album, All That
the Rain Promises, which finds them a little older, a little more serious
than on their previous releases. As anyone who follows the band knows, a
lot has happened in the two years since their last record.
The same could actually be said for both Jason Kutchma & the Future Kings
of Nowhere . . . it has been a little while since their previous releases,
and that's due in large part to a whole lot of life intervening in the
art-making process. It's a fitting lineup.
Saturday, November 12
Thee Oh Sees (http://panacherock.com/artists.php?id=86)
Total Control
Burglar Fucker (http://burglarfucker.bandcamp.com/)
Krankies, Winston-Salem
Thee Oh Sees are the band formed by the endlessly prolific John Dwyer after
the dissolution of his amazing garage-rock-punk-psych force of nature the
Coachwhips. Thee Oh Sees are maybe slightly more "pop" than the Coachwhips
but they're still a total freak scene.
Saturday, November 12
Birds of Avalon (http://www.myspace.com/birdsofavalon)
Savage Knights (http://www.retroactivedynamics.com)
Wooden Shjips
Kings, Raleigh
Three sides of the 21st-century psych movement.
Saturday, November 12
Schooner (http://www.schoonermusic.com)
Floating Action (http://www.myspace.com/floatingaction)
The Fling (http://thefling.us/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Floating Action & Schooner are two of the most immediately distinctive pop
outfits in North Carolina, due in large part to the vocal idiosyncracies &
general hooky weirdness of their frontmen, Seth Kaufmann and Reid Johnson,
respectively.
Saturday, November 12
Youth Lagoon (http://facebook.com/youthlagoon)
Young Magic (http://www.facebook.com/youngmagicsounds?sk=info)
Robes (http://robessound.com/)
Motorco Music Hall, Durham
Robes = longtime Carrboro home-recordist/secret popstar Pat Cudahy + former
Joby's Opinion multi-instrumentalist Chris Williams. They just put out a
pretty New Ordery 7".
Saturday, November 12
In the Year of the Pig (http://www.southernloveprod.com/ityotp.htm)
HOG (http://www.myspace.com/hoggnogg)
Bitter Resolve (http://www.myspace.com/bitterresolve)
The Cave, Chapel Hill
This metal/fuzz/drone show is way too big & loud to possibly fit into the
tiny "stage" area at the Cave. This is just insanity.
Saturday, November 12
Glass Witch (http://www.myspace.com/glasswitch)
Microkingdom (http://www.myspace.com/microkingdom)

Bloodshot Bill (http://www.bloodshotbill.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
The Tandoori Knights are Bloodshot Bill (who I guess is also doing a solo
set) and legendary garage-rock madman King Khan.
