Have to work late so can't make it, but I've heard great things from a pal who saw Shana Tucker, a soulful cellist and singer who recently moved here from New York, at Marsh Woodwinds a month or so back. She's worked with Hamiett Bluett, Sweet Honey in the Rock and the Blind Boys of Alabama and has a CD release thing tonight in Durham. Her Flash-laden site has audio and video: http://www.shanatucker.com/live/ ("No Get-Back" is pretty neat).
Here's the press release:

Shana’s “ChamberSoul” music is a sultry pastiche of acoustic pop and soulful, jazz-influenced contemporary folk. "It’s different, yet familiar...I love 80's music, I'm a sucker for jazz. Some of the grooves have a latin heartbeat, translated through percussive vocal phrasing. I can't deny my classical training; it inspires my cello sensibilities...but I like the thump of walking jazz/blues bass lines, too,” the independent artist offers as a self-described musical snapshot.
The concert’s musical personnel will include guitarist Chris Boerner (The Proclivities, The Foreign Exchange, Mosadi); pianist/accordionist Grant Osborne (Amy Grant, Vince Gill, John Brown Quintet, Jeanne Jolly); bassist Pete Kimosh (The Beast, Orquesta GarDel); and Josh Stohl (Justin Robinson & The Mary Annettes).
On September 1, 2010, Shana launched her fan-funded IndieGoGo campaign to raise money to complete the CD project. In sixty days, she successfully raised $5370 by inviting her fans to pre-purchase the CD in exchange for perks: name in liner credits, t-shirts, house concerts. In one month, Shana recorded her full-length debut CD, SHiNE at Sound Pure Studios (Durham) backed by an impressive roster of local musicians. SHiNE will be available in mid-February through online and local outlets, including iTunes, OffBeat Music (Durham) and FRANK is Art (Chapel Hill).
Somewhat of a newcomer to the Triangle music scene, Shana – a transplant from New York – has been performing in the area for a little over a year. Six Plates Wine Bar (Durham) was the first to book her on a monthly basis; Irregardless Café (Raleigh) owners Arthur and Anya Gordon asked Shana to perform for their live broadcast interview on WUNC 91.5 Radio’s The State of Things with Frank Stasio. Shana also performs monthly with her trio at Brasa – Brier Creek (Raleigh). 2010 festival appearances include Raleigh Wide Open 5, musicSPARK/SPARKcon, and Festival for the Eno.
Shana’s recent collaborative projects include playing cello on the title track of independent country artist Jeanne Jolly’s latest EP release, Falling in Carolina, and a new composition, MarAzul, for choreographer Andrea E. Woods’ blues wimmin and other performance & video works (2/12/11 – Duke University). Shana’s commissioned works include Nexxus and Savannah, which were composed for The Washington Ballet and premiered at The Kennedy Center (Washington, DC). Savannah was also chosen to debut at the Witts Theater in Johannesburg, South Africa.
While a member of string/vocal trio Hue, Shana opened for several critically-acclaimed recording artists, including the Indigo Girls, Sweet Honey in the Rock, jazz saxophonist Hamiett Bluett, drummer/vocalist Vinx, and the Blind Boys of Alabama.
