In case folks didn't know, the half-yearly record show is coming to town this
weekend. For what it's worth, I always find great stuff in the
4-for-$10/10-for-$25 bins some of the dealers set up.
todd and who doesn't like to at least handle Howlin Wolf Chess 45s I mean

Local 506, Chapel Hill
The thing I like most about Jonathan Richman is that he somehow manages
to be extraordinarily goofy and amazingly ornery at the same time. For
the longest time he refused to play any of his darker 70s Modern Lovers
material, playing instead only his super-sunny dippy stuff like "Ice
Cream Man" (which is itself incredibly catchy).
I'm told he pulls from a wider range of material nowadays, but I'm
guessing he's still every bit as cranky way down inside. Bless him.

Battlestar Canada is the remnants of a band that was called Scientific
Superstar. Joy in Red is half of Sequoya plus half of Beloved Binge plus
one. The Bastages were put together by Danny Hooley, who has been
playing punkrock in one form or another around the Triangle for the past
25+ years.

This is a party for Chaz's Bull City Records' 5th Anniversary. In
addition to the bands listed (as well as Brad & Phil Cook of Megafaun)
there will also be raffles of merch from local labels, plus heaven only
knows what else. It gets underway early: Last Year's Men go on at 7:30
(they have another show to play in Chapel Hill later, so they can't wait
around for your lame ass to show up). Here's the full lineup:
12:30 - Megafaun (Brad & Phil)
11:30 - Midtown Dickens
10:30 - Des Ark (solo)
9:30 - Maple Stave
8:30 - Cantwell Gomez & Jordan
7:30 - Last Year's Men

This is a release party for the great new Birds of Avalon album, a
self-titled number that's easily their best thus far. It retains the
swirly psych that they've become known for, but finds them increasingly
unafraid of a good pop hook.

Gross Ghost (http://www.myspace.com/grossghost)
Last Year's Men (http://www.myspace.com/lastyearsmenband)
The Cave, Chapel Hill
I find Vice magazine so confusing. I mean, I enjoy the Dos & Don'ts
(probably a bit too much), and the label occasionally puts out a good
record (like the new Off!), but nevertheless I can't help but mostly
feel like it's one more sleazy lad-mag & I find the whole endeavor
mostly a little off-putting.
So, um, this show/party is sponsored by Vice & VitaminWater, and it was
"curated" by the Love Language, which means either Stu picked some bands
with boys as indie-scruffy as he is, or Missy picked some bands with
boys as indie-scruffy as Stu is, or something, I dunno.
And they're all three great bands; don't get me wrong. But for fucksake,
it's not like this is a show that wouldn't have happened otherwise.
Although to be honest, that combo could probably have done pretty well
at the 506 on a Saturday night, so maybe the only artificial element of
note here is that it's at the Cave.
But so anyway. The email I got said that one could RSVP at the Vice
website or something, but it wasn't clear as to whether there was
anything to prevent one from just showing up. I wasn't gonna include the
link but then I remembered that the poster/flyer/whatever is pretty
funny, so here: http://www.viceland.com/uncappedlive/chapel_hill.php

Mac McCaughan
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham
Mac & I had a Twitter discussion a few weeks ago about whether his
(subsequently canceled) opening slot for Ted Leo was his first-ever solo
billing under his own name. After about 400 shows as Portastatic (OK,
well, probably more like 75), I guess it doesn't make all that much
difference, but still, theoretically *this* show may now be that one.
Anyway, initially when Merge contacted me it was "Superchunk" which
within the space of a couple of words was amended to "Mac & Jim
acoustic" which was subsequently amended further to "just Mac." There's
probably a possibility of further amendment, like maybe he'll just drive
by while I'm on the air or something.
Assuming it does happen, though, we've actually tentatively planned to
ignore our long-standing (16 years!) rule about not actually talking to
the guests on-air. Brace yourselves for stories about the good old days:
4:00 p.m. at 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Franz Nicolay (http://www.myspace.com/franznicolay)
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Because the one time I saw the Hold Steady, I kept saying to myself
"Man, the guy with the giant handlebar mustache playing piano really
needs to dump these guys & strike out on his own!"
OK, that's totally not fair. Franz Nicolay already had a rock-n-roll
career, with World/Inferno Friendship Society & others, before the Hold
Steady ever existed.
But still.
