Saturday, July 17
Bellafea (http://www.bellafea.com/)
The Curtains of Night (http://myspace.com/thecurtainsofnight)
Trophy Wife (http://trophywifetheband.blogspot.com/)
307 Knox HQ, Durham

This is a release party for the new Trophy Wife record, as well as a
celebration of 307 Knox's anniversary. It'll take place at their new HQ,
at 618 Foster St, just a half-block north of the Scrap Exchange. 7pm,
outdoors.

Saturday, July 17
Luego (http://luegomusic.com/)
Brett Harris
Jessee's Coffee Shop, Carrboro

Saturday, July 17
The Love Language (http://www.myspace.com/thelovelanguage)
Shithorse
The Light Pines (http://www.myspace.com/lightpines)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

CD-release party for the new Love Language album, Libraries, which is
every bit as good as their first, and which seems poised to take the
summer by storm.

Saturday, July 17
Red Collar (http://www.myspace.com/redcollarmusic)
Death Becomes Even The Maiden (http://www.myspace.com/dbetm)
Free Electric State (http://www.myspace.com/freeelectricstate)
The Pinhook, Durham

The Pinhook says this is the first time that Red Collar have played
there, which is almost inconceivable, given how closely both entities
are entwined with the Durham music scene.

Saturday, July 17
Spider Bags (http://www.myspace.com/spiderbags)
Last Year's Men (http://www.myspace.com/lastyearsmenband)
Fletcher (http://www.myspace.com/fletchercjohnson)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Last Year's Men are ripping up the house-show scene in Durham -- they've
gone from virtual unknowns to a lot of people's favorite band in the
space of about 7 months.

Saturday, July 17
Juan Huevos (http://www.myspace.com/juanhuevos)
DJ One Duran
Menya (http://www.myspace.com/menyamusic)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Saturday, July 17
Make (http://www.myspace.com/thebandmake)
Torch Runner (http://www.myspace.com/torchrunnernc)
Dickkicker (http://www.myspace.com/dickkickertlh)
Bleeder (http://bleeder.bandcamp.com/)
Reservoir, Carrboro

Sunday, July 18
Chuck Johnson
Zeke Graves
Caboladies
Sam Goldberg
All Day Records, Carrboro

All Day Records is a new/forthcoming record store in Carrboro, on Main
St, next to Acme & the OCSC. It used to be the mystery bar called Bert's
Smoke Shop. Chuck Johnson & Zeke Graves have both recorded many
different types of music under a variety of aliases; in this context,
they'll be playing traditional fingerstyle guitar (a la John Fahey,
etc).

Monday, July 19
Left Outlet (http://www.myspace.com/leftoutlet)
Instead of Sleeping
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Monday, July 19
Quitzow
Setting Sun
Reservoir, Carrboro

Tuesday, July 20
Ben Davis + The Jetts (http://www.lovitt.com/artists/bendavis.html)
We Are Hex (http://www.myspace.com/wearehex)
Supreme Fiction (http://www.myspace.com/supremefiction)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Ben Davis has a busy week happening, between this Tuesday-night show
with his current band the Jett$, and a string of shows with the reunited
Bats & Mice this weekend.

Wednesday, July 21
Max Indian (http://www.myspace.com/maxindian)
Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Durham

Max Indian are probably the most overtly pop-oriented of the Drughorse
Collective bands. This is the next-to-final indierock show of this
summer's Duke Performances Music in the Gardens series, so get your fill
of sunset-time music down by the lily pond while the getting's good.

Wednesday, July 21
The Butchies (http://www.thebutchies.com/)
Cuntry Kings (http://www.geocities.com/nc_kings/)
Pink Flag (http://www.myspace.com/pinkflagnc)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This, the first Butchies show in five years or so, is also a bit of a
fundraiser to help frontwoman Kaia Wilson achieve her dream of playing
Olympic-class Ping Pong at the Gay Games in Cologne. Yes, really. Arrive
promptly at 7:30 when the doors open & you can challenge Kaia to a game.
Yes, really.

Wednesday, July 21
Medications (http://www.myspace.com/medications)
I Was Totally Destroying It
(http://www.reverbnation.com/iwastotallydestroyingit)
Deleted Scenes
The Pinhook, Durham

Wednesday, July 21
In the Year of the Pig (http://www.southernloveprod.com/ityotp.htm)
Endless Boogie (http://www.noquarter.net/bands/eb.php)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Endless Boogie are a weird hairy NYC record-store-clerk blooz/jam/boogie
band. They opened for Yo La Tengo at the Carolina Theatre last year, but
I'll confess I got detained at dinner and missed them. Judging from the
expressions on the faces of the large numbers of people standing outside
the venue as I walked up, however, I got the impression that they
weren't supremely appealing to 100% of Durham Yo La Tengo fans.

Then again, In the Year of the Pig probably wouldn't thrill 100% of the
Triangle's YLT fans either, but their debut album, Jamon, is one of my
top-5 of 2010, so there you go.

Wednesday, July 21
Red Dons (http://www.myspace.com/reddons)
Southside Stranglers
Dios Mio (http://www.myspace.com/diosmio715)
Sic Sensation
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

Wednesday, July 21
Dexter Romweber (http://www.dexterromweber.com)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Thursday, July 22
Jon Shain (http://www.jonshain.com)
John Hiatt (http://www.johnhiatt.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

I saw John Hiatt exactly once, in the winter of '88/'89, during a
hellacious ice storm in Houston. He was touring to support what was, in
retrospect, his best album, "Slow Turning," and his backing band, as on
the album, was Louisiana's Goners. I don't know if it was the near-death
experience of getting to the show, or the surreality of the ice covering
everything in a city where the average wintertime temperature is like 87
degrees, or guitarist Sonny Landreth's endlessly inventive slide
playing. Regardless: it was a memorable evening.

Thursday, July 22
Wigg Report (http://www.synchronizedswim.org)
Jason Kutchma
Joy in Red (http://www.facebook.com/joyinred)
The Pinhook, Durham

The Wigg Report are so integral a part of Durham that their name is set
into the concrete under the bridge where I-85 crosses Club Boulevard
near Northgate Park. Look anywhere, far & wide, and you'll never find a
band more obviously in love with playing music with one another.

Jason Kutchma is the frontman for local high-octane, 100% anthemic
rockers Red Collar. Joy in Red are a new-ish band with Rob from Beloved
Binge & Matthew from Sequoya.

Thursday, July 22
Lake Inferior (http://www.myspace.com/lakeinferiormusic)
Casual Curious (http://www.myspace.com/casualcurious)
Hidden Cat (http://www.myspace.com/hiddencat)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Thursday, July 22
Blag'ard (http://www.blagard.com/)
Lonnie Walker (http://www.myspace.com/lonniewalker)
The Tomahawks (http://www.myspace.com/jeffcrawfordmusic)
Free Electric State (http://www.myspace.com/freeelectricstate)
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

Another great & varied cross-section of the local indie-rock scene, from
the Pavement-meets-Dylan weirdness of Lonnie Walker, to the UK overdrive
of Free Electric State, to the abrasive squall-rock of Blag'ard.

Thursday, July 22
Midtown Dickens (http://www.myspace.com/midtowndickens)
Kid Future
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

Yet another Local Bands, Local Beers, with the shambolic antifolk of
Durham's Midtown Dickens & brand-new Raleigh band Kid Future.

Friday, July 23
Fluff Chick (http://www.duke.edu/~alangley/fluffchick2.htm)
Actual Persons (Living or Dead)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Last show ever for Fluff Chick, who trace their origins to a
supposed-to-be one-off pickup Rock Lotto band sometime in the last
millennium.

Friday, July 23
Tres Chicas (http://www.treschicas.org/)
Chuck Prophet
Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh

Friday, July 23
Tiny Concept (http://www.myspace.com/tinyconcept)
Big Nuss
Ca$h $lave Clique (http://www.myspace.com/cashslaveclique)
America Reads (http://www.myspace.com/americareads)
Saytoothsay
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Friday, July 23
The Infamous Sugar (http://www.myspace.com/theinfamoussugar)
The Royal Nites
The Oscar Gambles
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Saturday, July 24
Girls Rock NC (http://www.girlsrocknc.org/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is the annual end-of-term showcase for the [middle-school-aged]
girls of the Girls Rock NC summer camp. It's a weeklong program, in
which the girls choose instruments, form bands, and write & rehearse at
least one original song.

It has been going on for so long (this is the 7th year) that some of
these girls are multi-year veterans, which I hope means wonderful things
are in store for the local music scene for years & years to come.

Saturday, July 24
Birds & Arrows (http://www.myspace.com/birdsandarrows)
The Stars Explode (http://www.myspace.com/thestarsexplode)
Jessee's Coffee Shop, Carrboro

Saturday, July 24
Fashion Design (http://fashiondesignband.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This is a reunion of the comparatively short-lived UK-influenced Chapel
Hill band Fashion Design. Half the band are currently living in NYC &
playing in Fan-Tan, so I wouldn't expect this to be an oft-repeated
event.

Saturday, July 24
Mark Holland's Rhythm Force
(http://www.myspace.com/mhollandsrhythmforce)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Saturday, July 24
DJ Nasty Boots
Pykrete (http://www.bullfightparty.org/cirox/pykrete)
Kinoeye
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

2xLP release for Pykrete, the avant/electronic/noise/drone brainchild of
Chapel Hill -> Oakland ex-pat Chuck Johnson.

Saturday, July 24
The Manics (http://www.myspace.com/themanicsrock)
Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls
(http://www.myspace.com/richardbacchus)
Cherry Case
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Sunday, July 25
Shipwrecker (http://www.myspace.com/shipwreckermuzak)
WXDU 88.7 FM, Durham

Shipwrecker are sort of a "country" band, if country music were made
exclusively by pirates. Half-drunk, somewhat remorseful pirates. 4:00
p.m. at 88.7 FM or wxdu.org.

Sunday, July 25
Just Friends (http://www.myspace.com/justfriendssounds)
Tradition (http://www.myspace.com/tradition)
Dirty Fist (http://www.myspace.com/dirtyfist)
Damnsels (http://www.myspace.com/thedamnselssecretlove)
The Pinhook, Durham

This show starts at 6:00 p.m.

Sunday, July 25
Bats and Mice (http://www.batsandmice.com/)
Monsonia (http://www.monsonia.com)
Cinemechanica (http://www.cinemechanica.com/)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Third in a short run of live dates for a reunited Bats & Mice, the
early-00s Lovitt Records band that included Chapel Hill's Ben Davis.

Sunday, July 25
The Loners (http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/loners.html)
The Vents (http://www.myspace.com/thevents)
The Ts (http://www.myspace.com/thettttt)
Richard Bacchus & the Luckiest Girls
(http://www.myspace.com/richardbacchus)
Static Minds
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Five subtly different facets of that massive beer-scented beast known as
Raleigh Rock.

Monday, July 26
Wild Wild Geese (http://www.myspace.com/wildwildgeesemusic)
Savages (http://www.myspace.com/letsbesavages)
The Cave, Chapel Hill
