1) FILM SCREENING: "IRAQ: MEETING RESISTANCE"!

PLEASE NOTE: Date and time have been changed to WEDNESDAY, 3/18 at 6 PM.

Join us for a screening of the documentary "Meeting Resistance" and
discussion about Iraq's National Liberation Movement!

March 19, 2009 will mark the six year anniversary of the U.S. invasion
and occupation of Iraq. For the past six years, Iraqis have waged a
heroic resistance, armed and unarmed, to the occupation of their
country. The film "Meeting Resistance" offers us a first-hand view of
the anti-occupation struggle through the eyes of Iraqis. From the
film's website: "What would you do if America was invaded? MEETING
RESISTANCE raises the veil of anonymity surrounding the Iraqi
insurgency by meeting face to face with individuals who are
passionately engaged in the struggle, and documenting for the very
first time, the sentiments experienced and actions taken by a nation's
citizens when their homeland is occupied." (www.meetingresistance.com)

The film will be followed by a discussion on Iraq's national
liberation struggle and the tasks of the U.S. antiwar movement. This
event is organized by Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO), a
revolutionary socialist and Marxist-Leninist organization in the
United States. For more information about FRSO, visit
http://www.frso.org. For reporting on Iraq, visit
http://www.fightbacknews.org/intl.html#Iraq. Contact
triangle.frso AT gmail.com for more information on this event. You can
RSVP at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=54354840981.

screenings are organized by the North Carolina Animal Defense League.

3) "POLINIZACIONES" - BEEHIVE COLLECTIVE PRESENTS ON COLUMBIAN
CULTURAL RESISTANCE! (FRI, 3/20, 7 PM)
Even though the tactics have changed, the USA's, foreign War on Drugs
known as Plan Colombia, has the same objectives as it did nearly a
decade ago. Now, more relevant than ever, the Hive's graphics are
being used by communities in resistance to these corporate- and
government-led policies of destruction. Using Beehive graphics and
other media, the work of Polinizaciones creates another way to
converse, as well as to build and understand our history in the
context of globalization, Plan Colombia, Free Trade, IIRSA-Plan Puebla
Panama and corporate colonization. The bilingual Polinizaciones
Reportback will highlight the Beehive's giant Plan Colombia banner,
though enriched with projected photographs and personal experiences
and stories about the communities in resistance we have been weaving
relations of mutual aid with over the last two years.

Throughout Abya Yala (South America), Beehive graphics are being used
by youth and community educators in Indigenous, Afro descendent,
campesino, and urban poor communities as a medium for dialogue and
raising consciousness around the current threats against these
communities. Come to a Polinizaciones picture-lecture and share
stories and strategies with a Bee freshly returned from Colombia!

For more info, check out http://www.beehivecollective.org,

SAT, 4/11, 3 PM: POETRY READING WITH PAULA KEITH

SAT, 4/18, 7 PM: FILM SCREENING- "WHO IS BOZO TEXINO?": THE SECRET
HISTORY OF HOBO GRAFFITI
"Who is Bozo Texino?" chronicles the search for the source of a
ubiquitous and mythic rail graffiti - a simple sketch of a character
with an infinity-shaped hat and the scrawled moniker, "Bozo Texino" -
a drawing seen on railcars for over 80 years. Daniel's gritty black
and white film uncovers a secret society and it?s underground universe
of hobo and railworker graffiti, and includes interviews with
legendary boxcar artists, Coaltrain, Herby, Colossus of Roads, and The
Rambler. Shooting over a 16-year period, Daniel rode freights across
the West carrying a Super-8 sound camera and a 16mm Bolex. During his
quest he discovered the roots of a folkloric tradition that has gone
mostly unnoticed for a century. Taking inspiration from Beat artists
Robert Frank and Jack Kerouac, the film functions as both a
sub-cultural documentary and a stylized fable on wanderlust and
outsider identity.

Texas-reared, San Francisco exile, and confirmed tramp, Bill Daniel
continues to experiment with survivalism and bricolage in his efforts
to record and report on the various social margins he often finds
himself in. His work began in 1980 with a 10,000-shot photo
documentation of the blossoming punk rock scene in Austin, Texas. His
subcultural documentary subjects have included bicycle messengers,
radical environmentalists, hobo graffiti artists, and swap meet guitar
players. Since completing the film Bill Daniel and "Who is Bozo
Texino?" have been touring on the road, wowing audiences of punks,
geezers, folkies, foamers and graffiti toughs all over the nasty ol?
USA and across Europe and South America.

WED, 4/22, 7 PM: "MUSLIMS OF METROPOLIS" - AUTHOR READING WITH KAVITHA
RAJAGOPALAN

Join us for an exciting evening with visiting scholar Kavitha
Rajagopalan as she reads from her new book "Muslims of Metropolis"!

In Muslims of Metropolis, Kavitha Rajagopalan takes a much needed step
in personalizing and humanizing our understanding of the Muslim
diaspora. Tracing the stories of three very different families - a
Palestinian family moving to London, a Kurdish family moving to
Berlin, and a Bangladeshi family moving to New York - she reveals a
level of complexity and nuance that is seldom considered. Through
their voices and in their words, Rajagopalan describes what prompted
these families to leave home, what challenges they faced in adjusting
to their new lives, and how they came to view their place in society.
Interviews with community leaders, social justice organizations, and
with academics and political experts in each of the countries add
additional layers of insight to how broad political issues, like
nationalist conflict, immigration reform, and anti-terrorism
strategies affect the lives of Muslims who have migrated in search of
economic stability and personal happiness. Whether read as simple
stories or broadernarratives, the voices in this revealing book are
among the many speaking against generalization, prejudice, and fear
that has so far surrounded Muslims living in the West.

Kavitha Rajagopalan has worked in international development and
finance, and as a journalist in India, Germany, and the United States.
She is currently a senior fellow at the World Policy Institute. Visit
Kavitha's website at http://kaviraj.typepad.com.
