The hurricane is more or less past by now, so AFAIK the Coalition to Unchain Dogs benefit at Durham Central Park is proceeding as planned.

Saturday, September 6
Caitlin Cary
Schooner (http://www.schoonermusic.com)
Midtown Dickens (http://www.myspace.com/midtowndickens)
Lost in the Trees (http://www.lostinthetrees.com)
La Tropa de Tierra Caliente (http://www.myspace.com/latropadetierracaliente)
Central Park, Durham

This is a benefit for Durham's Coalition to Unchain Dogs, an organization that couples its political activism -- working towards passage of an anti-tethering ordinance -- with direct action, namely approaching the owners of tethered dogs and offering to build fences for them, at no charge to the owners. In the past year they've freed over 100 dogs, and currently have a waitlist of 30+ more. So your donation at this show will go directly to helping one of those animals.

The lineup is a nice cross-section of local talent well-suited for a Saturday afternoon in the park, from the quirk-folk of Midtown Dickens, the indie-rock of Schooner, the chamber-pop of Lost in the Trees, the country-folk of singer-songwriter Caitlin Cary, to La Tropa de Tierra Caliente, a 7-piece Latin band from Durham (heavy on the valve trombones) with totally badass matching outfits.

Things get underway at 4:30, and tickets are $12 at the gate, though you're welcome to donate more.

Saturday, September 6
The Loners (http://www.demonbeachrecords.com/loners.html)
Sadlack's Heroes, Raleigh

Stripped-down gtr/drums garage-rock blast = the Loners.

Saturday, September 6
Kaze (http://www.souldojo.com/)
Mosadi Music (http://www.mosadimusic.com/)
Hammer No More the Fingers (http://www.hnmtf.com)
Tooth (http://www.myspace.com/toothrocks)
Caverns (http://www.myspace.com/caverns)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is a "Barack the Cradle" Obama fundraiser, featuring a cross-section of local talent, from indie-rock (HNMTF) to metal (Tooth) to hip-hop (Kaze) to nu-soul/funk/hip-hop (Mosadi Music).

Saturday, September 6
The Ex-Monkeys (http://www.myspace.com/theexmonkeys)

The Cave, Chapel Hill

Sunday, September 7
Liam Finn (http://www.myspace.com/theliamfinn)
The Veils (http://www.myspace.com/theveils)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Liam Finn's from New Zealand, and he just made Paste Magazine's list of new artists to watch (alongside ex-Raleighite Justin Vernon's Bon Iver), which I suppose means you should check your demographic & act accordingly.

Monday, September 8
Boss Martians (http://www.bossmartians.com/)
Stratocruiser (http://www.stratocruisermusic.com/)
Slim's Downtown, Raleigh

Stratocruiser just put out a new album of their 99 & 94/100th's % Pure Power Pop.

Tuesday, September 9
The Whigs (http://www.thewhigs.com)
Tokyo Police Club (http://www.tokyopoliceclub.net)
The Coast (http://www.thecoastmusic.com)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Tuesday, September 9
Jambang (http://www.myspace.com/jambangmusic)
The Taylor Texas Corrugators (http://www.myspace.com/txcorrugators)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Greg Ginn is something of an asshole, so he's probably half-hoping that you'll turn up at this show expecting brain-melting shred, which you aren't gonna get. The Taylor Texas Corrugators are his bent take on western swing, or rather his half-baked notion of what western swing might entail; and Jambang is just about what you'd expect from the name.

Tuesday, September 9
Anton Sword (http://www.myspace.com/antonsword)
Clothing and Shoes (http://www.myspace.com/clothingandshoesmusic)
MC Homeless (http://www.myspace.com/mchomeless)

Wednesday, September 10
The Ettes (http://www.myspace.com/theettes)
Mr. Gnome (http://www.myspace.com/mrgnome)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

The Ettes are woman-fronted garage-rock from LA with releases on SFTRI. Mr. Gnome are from Cleveland.

Thursday, September 11
Wigg Report (http://www.synchronizedswim.org)
Veronique Diabolique (http://www.veroniquediabolique.com/)
CCB Plaza (aka The Bull's Balls), Durham

Two sides of Durham: the lo-fi guerrilla-folk of the Wigg Report vs. the latex-and-leather hyper-goth faux-French rock silliness of Veronique Diabolique. These Thursday-afternoon shows start early (like 5:30, seriously), so step lively.

Thursday, September 11
Silver Jews (http://www.weeblackskelf.co.uk/cordsuit/)
Monotonix (http://www.monotonix.com/)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

Hi-energy Israeli rock-n-roll freaks Monotonix hit the road with acerbic baritone poet David Berman's Silver Jews.

Thursday, September 11
Gray Young (http://www.myspace.com/grayyoung)
The Bronzed Chorus (http://www.myspace.com/thebronzedchorus)
Tir Na Nog, Raleigh

Thursday, September 11

Stu Cole
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Thursday, September 11
Carcass (http://www.myspace.com/carcass)
Suffocation (http://www.myspace.com/suffocation)
1349
Aborted
Rotten Sound (http://www.myspace.com/rottensound)
Volume 11 Tavern, Raleigh

Yes, grindcore pioneers Carcass, reunited (well, 3/4ths anyway -- original drummer Ken Owen's health problems prevent him from being able to play that stuff) for the first time since the 90s.

Friday, September 12
Cantwell, Gomez, Jordan (http://www.cantwellgomezandjordan.com)
Juan Huevos (http://www.myspace.com/juanhuevos)
The Soulless Dogs (http://www.myspace.com/soullessdogs)
Armadillo Grill @ the Bryan Center, Duke W. Campus, Durham

These campus shows are pretty early -- dinnertime, or just past -- so you can hit one and still make it to something else afterwards.

The folks booking these seem to be going for the max variety within each show, so you've got the sketchy party-rap of Juan Huevos, the utter genius avant-skronk-punk of Cantwell Gomez & Jordan, and the proficient, straightforward (albeit lyrically bizarre) blues-funk of Duke band the Soulless Dogs.

Friday, September 12
Dexter Romweber (http://www.dexterromweber.com)
Sadlack's Heroes, Raleigh

Friday, September 12
Midtown Dickens (http://www.myspace.com/midtowndickens)
Lost in the Trees (http://www.lostinthetrees.com)
Kelly Rosebud (http://www.myspace.com/kellymichellerosebud)
PT Scarborough is a Movie (http://www.myspace.com/ptdog)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is a CD-release show for the new Lost in the Trees CD -- Lost in the Trees being the chamber-pop outfit of Ari Picker, who grew up around here but now attends the Berklee College of Music.

The openers are a mix of music (Durham spazz-folkers Midtown Dickens) and comedy (Popular Kid Kelly Crisp/Rosebud, and DSI regular PT Scarborough).

Friday, September 12
Water Callers
Sawteeth McTweedy and the Particles (http://www.myspace.com/sawteethmctweedy)
Pizza Palace, Durham

Friday, September 12
Eugene Chadbourne (http://www.eugenechadbourne.com/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

It has been quite a while since the good Dr. Chadbourne has graced us with his presence. This close to an election, it's a safe bet that his freakout C+W/spazzjazz will be accompanied by a hefty dose of political protest-folk as well.

Friday, September 12
Portastatic (http://www.portastatic.com)
Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies (http://www.myspace.com/violetvectorandthelovelylovelies)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

This show marks the release of the career-spanning Portastatic 2-disc compilation "Some Small History," which if nothing else serves as a reminder of how nutty the 90s were -- tiny indie labels proliferated, and for a while it seemed like every one of 'em had released a Portastatic 7".

Nowadays, Portastatic are a crackerjack rockband, with Jim Wilbur, Margaret White, and Mac's brother Matt. Their show at the beginning of the summer, at Duke Gardens, was the best I've ever seen them play, even in the midst of a torrential downpour.

Friday, September 12
The Old Ceremony (http://www.theoldceremony.com/)
The Proclivities (http://www.myspace.com/theproclivities)
Pour House, Raleigh

Saturday, September 13
Dead to Society (http://www.myspace.com/deadtosociety101)
The Homewreckers (http://www.myspace.com/jackandjillhomewrecker)
The Aints (http://www.myspace.com/latterdayaints)
Marvell Building, Durham

This is an early (7:00) all-ages punkrock show. The Homewreckers are beginning to build something of a buzz around Durham.

Saturday, September 13
Killer Filler (http://www.myspace.com/killerfiller)
Broad Street Cafe, Durham

Saturday, September 13
Twilighter (http://twilighter.net/)
The Cave, Chapel Hill

Twilighter seem equally influenced by daily life in rural Orange & Chatham, and the Velvet Underground.

Saturday, September 13
The Moaners (http://www.themoaners.com/)
Filthybird (http://www.myspace.com/filthybird)
The Alcazar Hotel (http://www.myspace.com/thealcazarhotel)
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Filthybird make great swirling stormclouds of sound, driven by frontwoman Renee Mendoza's piano & otherworldly vocals. Their "Southern Skies" was in my top-10 albums of 2007.

Sunday, September 14
T.K. Webb (http://www.nypress.com/15/23/music/musicreviews2.cfm)
