>>>I don't understand the reasons that compel people to want things that have
such overblown features which a person could not possibly use without
constantly wearing such a device. This is similar to the hundreds of
channels of programming now available on subscription based TV. Why
would anyone pay for all of those channels if they can never watch all
of the channels at once? It is wasteful and indicative of a society
out of touch with a sustainable future.

Well, no, it's because it's cheaper...at least, for cable. Sure, I
get hundreds of channels but the ten so I watch the most are different
than the ten so my girl might watch (on the same TV) and likely
different than your top 10. If we only paid for the ones we watched,
we'd likely be paying more cos we'd have to compensate the cable
company for such individual needs. It's why, in most cases, the full
album on iTunes is cheaper than buying it track by track.

But back to the original point, the interest in having your entire
music collection handy isn't so you can listen to it all at once, but
so you can listen to what you want, when you want to. The idea is
that, at any whim, you can switch from Hank Williams to N.W.A. without
having to plan in advance. I listen to so much different music these
days cos it's all at my fingertips. When I used my CD player, I'd
often listen to the five CDs in my CD changer for a week before taking
them out.
