Wednesday - 4/25 - Guru's Jazzmatazz - Way back when this project
first hit the streets, headphones and decks, the idea of hiphop and jazz
existed in fairly separate worlds despite Miles Davis Doo-Bop release as well
as various singles and efforts by hiphop and jazz musicians to replicate.
But Guru, from hiphop world's legendary Gangstarr, came through hooking up
collaborations with the who's whos and successfully initiating what is hiphop
and jazz fusion. Today the jazz is much more evident in the groove when it
comes to so much we listen to now. Cats Cradle, 309 E. Main St, Carrboro -

Thursday - 4/26 to Saturday - 4/28 - Signal: Southeast Electronic Music
Festival - This is the second time around for the electronic fest based in
Chapel Hill and by the looks of it, the party is much more amped and
positively brimming with signs of evolution. Local, national and
international djs and bands will be sharing the boombeat with listeners and
dancers over the next few days while the fest also carries on with industry
networking, workshops and of course the unavoidable afterparty. Everything
from ambient to live experimental to hiphop to drum and bass to world beats
to the various shades of house music will be in the ear. Thursday night
starts off with a talk by one of THE innovators, Derrick May, of what really
is techno music. (However not what many people consider is techno as a
standard knee-jerk response). Let the parties begin! Check
www.signalfest.com for information.

Friday & Saturday - 4/27 & 4/28 - Douga & Douga & Gran Reserva - The words

auction, free beer and wine. dJ Castro lights up the space with sound for a
good cause and even better in Riviera's new upstairs club. All donations

*Friday, April 27, at 4:00 in the afternoon*

*ARIEL GORE talks about her new book*

*HOW TO BECOME A FAMOUS WRITER BEFORE YOU'RE DEAD*.

Ariel Gore is the woman who founded Hip Mama, a parenting magazine
for parents for whom those other parenting magazines don't work. The *San
Jose Mercury News* dubbed her "Conservative America's worst nightmare."

Here's a review from Booklist:
The best thing about this writers' guide is that it doesn't sound like any
other writers' guide. Gore tells you to do a lot of things that other
authors say are either wrong or irrelevant. Sure, you can waste time making
yourself a lovely little space to write in, but how's that going to get your
name on a published book? What you need to do, Gore says, is just be a
writer. If you have a story to tell, tell it, and once you've told it,
promote the hell out of it. Publish it yourself, if you have to, and then
sell it. Check the local papers, find a spoken-word open-mike night, and go
read your material in front of an audience. Send out press releases; publish
your own magazine. And, most important, learn real fast that nobody out
there will give a damn about what you have got to say until you make them
pay attention to you. One of the snappiest, most useful books a writer for
hire is likely to read. **
