Downtown is still there, although much of it has changed. Backdoor is still
around.. they've changed the inside around quite a bit over the years and
don't do shows even half as much as they used to. The guys that work there
built a new skate park last year down off of east 10th Street. There have
been a few good shows out there since it's opened, but nothing on a regular
basis or anything.
Peasant's closed down about 2(?) years ago now. Currently, it's some lame
ass dance club with shitty music called Aqua. They remodeled the whole
inside of the building.. you probably wouldn't even recognize it if you saw
it. It kind of makes me want to yak. Mirrors and water and neon lights
everywhere.. hell, give me dirty old Peasant's back.. the music actually
meant something and I miss Mug Night.
The Attic is long gone (longer gone than Peasant's). It has become many
things since then. Currently, it's called The Cavern (I think). Just another
booty club.
The cops have been coming down on house shows harder than ever. After
Peasant's closed, there was truly nowhere left for good live music to
happen. We had a tight network of houses and had shows at least twice a
week up until last year when the cops pretty much figured out where each one
was. Last year was pretty much the year of $100 noise violation tickets and
getting pepper sprayed by the cops (things got real shitty real fast).
Luckily, Jeff's house is in a pretty decent location, but it is way too tiny
and has been through way too much.
Anyway, when the Spazzatorium Galleria reopens, I encourage everyone to make
the trip out to Greenville for some shows. We have bands come from pretty
much all over the world, it's cheap as hell to get drunk, and you're almost
always guaranteed an after party somewhere with good music, dancing, and
more alcohol.
But back to the original post: if you have any suggestions, input, guidance
on how to really get this off the ground with all legalities considered,
please don't hold back!! It's been coming a long way, and hopefully will be
back open in a month from now (if not sooner). We've got some really good
shows coming up, including The Robot Ate Me in April, and Jamie Stewart of
Xiu Xiu in September. And just remember.. Greenville is only about an hour
away!

I used to live in Greenville 10 years ago. My band at the time (Javier
and the Cabana Boys) used to play at Backdoor Skatepark a lot. There
were a lot of house party shows too, but the cops would always bust
them after a few songs. We played at Peasants a few times, and the
Attic once.
Did they ever pave over downtown? Last time I was there (7 years ago
exactly) there was talk of ECU buying downtown to build parking and
get rid of the EZU reputation. I think that same time they said cops
could open any car door that appeared to be unlocked. Ah good ole
Greenville.

Triangle has been the mecca of live music. I haven't been everywhere
throughout this country (besides some of the east coast and having grown up
in NJ) but the single greatest live music experiences I've had occured in
the areas that this mailing list focuses on. Living in a town like
Greenville, which in it's past has had a live music history, but now has
almost entirely given up on that medium to make way for booty dancing bars
and the like, I've found it to be a struggle to find even one-hundreth of
the passion that flows through this list in order to do something about the
state of things here. I've come from doing non-legit house shows to
desperately trying to foster a semi-legit, completely donation-based
performance space (The Spazzatorium Galleria!). I'm starting at the
proto-level and any advice from those experienced would be appreciated :

The city planning board told us one thing, the police warned us otherwise. I
have no lawyer friends to ask for advice. Anyone?
