One Greensboro note of note: Andrew's closing Gate City Noise for real this time, on 12/22, and Pete's looking to sell the Flying Anvil, after less than a year of operation (apparently the 9-5 job he was initially promised was somehow converted into 18-hour days, 7 days a week or something). So if you've ever had dreams of running a rockclub with a now-apparently-defunct record store attached to it, now's your chance.

Otherwise:

Thursday, December 7
The Great Cover-Up (http://www.kingsbarcade.com)
Kings, Raleigh

This is the 8th Annual Great Cover-Up, wherein local bands (and/or ad-hoc groupings of local musicians) put together short "tribute" sets to their favorite bands. Some people wear more wigs than other people, but nearly everybody goes absurdly all-out music-wise, so it's nearly always a good time.

You don't get to know in advance who's playing when, or whom they're covering, so it's a crapshoot; odds from previous years indicate that if you're gonna miss one night, the first night might be the one to miss, but there've been at least a couple of years where missing night one would've meant missing the best bands of the weekend. Can you risk it?

Of course, now that Kings is half-nonsmoking (no smoking before midnight), you should be able to survive a 3-night stint without doing quite so much damage to yrself.

More details from Kings: Your favorite (only the best, of course) local bands transform themselves into THEIR favorite bands for an evening, and play a short set in character. As much fun as you can have in a rock club. Past years have seen performances honoring Tom Petty, Devo, The Who, X, Danzig, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, Lynard Skynard, Black Sabbath...you get the picture. Proceeds to benefit InterAct and the Wake County Literacy Council. and the NC Food Bank. ADMISSION IS $5 plus CANNED OR DRY GOODS DONATION FOR EASTERN NC FOOD BANK!

Erie Choir (http://www.eriechoir.com)
Ghost to Falco (http://www.purevolume.com/GhosttoFalco)
The Upsidedown Stars (http://www.rabbot.net)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Nightlight says:

Erie Choir is Eric Roehrig's song-smith revelry, rotating cast, earnest voice-strum interplay, and warmth. Ghost to Falco (ex-Alarmist) will rumble in with guitar, this time hopefully with bass and drums. Not that Rosemary-Village shaking rumble that I envision in my sleep, but a more subtle and inward rumble, like the rumble of a belly at a disturbing lunchtime murmur. Expect this show to wind outward and inward. Begins a thirteen day tour for GTF at our very own Nightlight. This Portland, OR band features Eric Crespo, formerly of Burlington, NC, who has stopped through these parts in the past. So the Erics's bring up the rear, and The UDS open. The Upsidedown Stars are of Robot vs Rabbit, a duo formed from the trio. Expect some seriously ear-splitting thudge slup grog sound, like fatass goatboy cigar burps. Pretty gross huh? I promise you will not be disappointed if volume is sought. Overall, however, this show covers a musical spectrum not often available in one night. We consider ourselves grateful. 10 PM $5

1986 (http://www.myspace.com/1986music)
Schooner (http://www.schoonermusic.com)

Chapel Hill's Trekky Records have just released their second Christmas album; this time around, though different songs feature different members of the Trekky stable, the CD as a whole is credited to the Trekky Yuletide Orchestra, which may or may not be the same Trekky allstars/supergroup that's known as Auxiliary House during the rest of the year.

Uncle Onion
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Nightlight says:

Mixed Improv Styles, tonight's your pleasure. Bivins, Davis & Ghaphery is the lineup of the same name who released an improv jazz album on Umbrella recordings called Impermanence last year. A softly deft coalescing reel of interplay between sax, guitar, and drums. I am a huge sucker for this stuff - best chore music around, assuming you are raking leaves indoors or something equally obtuse. Uncle Onion is the debut performance by local musician Allen Bell (Boner Machine, Anazina Mirage, Boyzone Panevino-era). Solo guitar plus formless vocalizations and intricate meanderings through hard mossy ground. Improvised, yet guileless. 10 PM $5

Chaz's Bull City Records

film screening/teach-in @ 8pm
benefit show @ 9pm

CACTUS is a grassroots organization based in the La Mixteca region of Oaxaca, home to Mexico's poorest municipalities. CACTUS works to resist oppressive economic and political policies that leave the people of La Mixteca impoverished and marginalized. But they are not powerless! CACTUS is part of the Asamblea Popular del Pueblo de Oaxaca, APPO (Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca), who have been occupying the capital of Oaxaca since June 2006 demanding the resignation of governor Ulises Ruiz and the establishment of more just political structure that responds to the needs of the people.

On November 25 CACTUS and other organizations from La Mixteca were traveling to Oaxaca City to participate in the seventh mega march of the APPO when their buses were stopped by paramilitaries. One bus was offloaded and then set on fire. Over 20 people were arrested and are still being detained. CACTUS organizers have received death threats and have been in hiding for the last two months to avoid arrest, disappearance and assassination. They are being treated like criminals when all they are doing is exercising their right to live with dignity.

CACTUS needs cash money to get their comrades out of jail!!!!!!!!

The Drowsies-Raleigh punk
Something's Wrong-Asheville punk
Feast Upon Thy Brother-Durham metal

Thursday, December 14
Monsonia (http://www.monsonia.com)
Maple Stave (http://www.maplestave.com)
Fighting Poseidon (http://www.myspace.com/fightingposeidon)
Reservoir, Carrboro

First Triangle show for Fighting Poseidon, a new indierock band featuring Eric Mann of Kudzu Wish, plus folks from the Ladderback/Continent, plus I dunno who all else. Also the first show for the new lineup of Monsonia; after spending part of this year as a duo of Carter Browning on guitar & Andy Willard on drums, they've got a new bassist: Nick Peterson, who probably recorded half your favorite local CDs of the past few years.

The Maple Stave don't have any new members, but they do have a new-ish EP, their second, which will likely wind up placing pretty high up in your year-end top-10, should you be wise enough to purchase it.

Friday, December 15
Black Taj (http://www.amishrecords.com/ami021.html)
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is the annual holiday party thrown by local shirt-printers The Merch. Black Taj is Dave & Steve from Polvo, plus Grant & Tom from the Jimi Hendrix Inexperience. They sound a lot like the half of Polvo's "Shapes" that sounded like a classic rock record. The show is free; Tim Ross aka DJ Twombly will also be spinning.

Friday, December 15
Armenia (http://utenti.lycos.it/bizzarreaudioarts)
Bucketovscissors
Jason Crumer (http://www.dadadrumming.org/jasoncrumer/)
Niou
Precious Holes
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Nightlight says:

Noise and other types of Noise together for fullness and clarity. Jason Crumer is the devil spawn of Eric Adams and Tina Turner. Only the harshest, shotgun rattling amp fried raw shrimp locopop noise. He recommends Armenia (from Ecuador), notable as one of the initial proponents of harsh noise from South of the Border, a leader in Latin America's noise scene. Bucketovscissors from Germany fills the disparate holes of soulless cheese with bleak distress and heartless blorg. Niou is folk noise from Zeckendorf. Precious Holes is spazz noise from Greenville, I wonder is there some Birth Raddle connection? Oh, yes there is I just heard that it's good old Jim from Greenville, we love that guy. To quote Crumer - "This is a GOOD noise line up." 10 PM $5

Friday, December 15
$2 Pistols (http://www.myspace.com/twodollarpistols)

If you haven't seen the Pistols in a while, perhaps you've forgotten that John Howie Jr. is your favorite living country singer. Go on, get reminded.

Kings, Raleigh

Dark Meat (etc) are the huge rock/psych collective from Athens (which includes a couple of ex-Greensboro type folks). They've been through town a few times this year, and seem to have left a lot of stunned expressions in their wake.

If you've missed the past couple Dexter Romweber shows, you might not have gotten the word: He's playing as a duo with sister Sara Romweber (Let's Active, Snatches of Pink) behind the drumkit. Their set opening for Cat Power was one of the best Dex-related sets I've ever seen, equal parts ragged power and wicked swing.

Saturday, December 16
Times New Viking (http://www.timesnewviking.com/)
Psychedelic Horseshit (http://www.myspace.com/psychedelichorseshit)
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

Nightlight sez:

Super-secret super-awesome addition to our stellar December times. Imagine if your favorite rock band ever died, came back as talented zombies, got a four track, and did covers of their own songs with golden instruments. Now you are halfway there. Think of all the bullies and hot men and women in your life. Put them in one room and then take apart their clothing with tiny scissors. The results of your disrobing experiment are the mitochondria of romantic desperation. Now indicate the level of depth inherent in the message of tonight on a scale of 1 to 10, upon which Todd Pontius remarked clearly - "Vintage Fangoria". Both bands from Columbus. One more band from Chapel Hill or Durham, perhaps Raleigh, and the show will be complete. 10 PM $5

Saturday, December 16
