I would like to speak to the issue of promoting local bands on campus
via organizations like the student-run radio station WXYC FM and the
Carolina Union Activities Board (CUAB). As the Events Planner for WXYC
and as some one who has worked intimately with the CUAB Music Chair,
I'm familiar with the resources of both of these organizations as well
as the logistics of project planning. Both WXYC and CUAB are invested
in local musicians. WXYC holds a (usually) monthly event called the
Backyard Barbeque at the Local 506, which is linked up with our local
music show of the same name. The BYBBQ show features music of local
artists and interviews too. The monthly concert hopes to realize our
mission to bring local music closer to the student body. In our
experiences, we have found attendance at the BYBBQ shows are often low.
As a management team, we are currently evaluating this situation and
brainstorming ways to bring students to the local music community. The
ideas that have been expressed so far include the desirability of
including a wider variety of local music groups in these live shows and
additionally focusing more on student bands an on-campus events. If
members of this listserv forum wish to employ campus organizations such
as WXYC FM and CUAB to increase the listenerships of local bands, then
they should try sharing their ideas with high-level members of these
groups. You can contact me, Lauren Brenner, by e-mail at
lbrenner AT email.unc.edu or you can call (919) 962-7768 or come to my
office hours at the radio station on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The CUAB Music Chair's name is Robert Gurdian and he can be reached at
rgurdian AT email.unc.edu. He holds office hours Mondays and Wednesday in
the CUAB office at the student union from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
