i thought all the cool kids were going with timbuk2
bags?

ha. well, booqbag xl is the cadillac. but for a third
of the price you can get this:

http://www.academicsuperstore.com/mfg/index.html?c=Wenger%3A+Swiss+Gear

the color matters in size on these. the grey one is
the monster. the black one is tiny. i originally had
the red one, but after it experienced a zipper failure
(my fault, i overstuffed it), i got a refund and got a
grey one. it is the most overpadded sack i could find.
these models have been discontinued by wenger, but the
stores are still loaded with them. i know both staples
and the ram shop have the grey one left.

i found these after much searching around and trying
out firsthand. they don't come with a cool logo, or in
fabulous retro colors, but they are the best for the
money. mine holds a powerbook, a thinkpad (both in
padded compartments), a small library of programming
manuals (three thick books and a stack of o'reilly
pocket guides), a treo keyboard, a good size depot of
power and network cables and adapters, office supplies
and notepads, and still has room for a couple of water
bottles and all the conference cotton you can
reasonably haul away. it weighs a ton loaded down like
that. but the padding is so good, i only notice it
when putting it on or taking it off.

if you are going to be carrying around books with your
laptop, don't get one of those man purses/messenger
bags unless you like giving business to physical
therapists. same goes for those new fangled single
strap throw packs. two shoulders, two straps, center
of gravity down the middle.
