I'm going to Pittsburgh. Y'all have fun with the Wusses, OK?

Wednesday, March 16
The Know [http://www.theknowrocks.com], Awesome New Republic, Eyes to Space [http://www.eyestospace.net/]
Martin Street Music Hall, Raleigh

The Know are currently in the midst of releasing their first album, Shock and Awe, which plants them squarely at the midpoint of the rather short line between The Cherry Valence and The Weather. Raleigh Rock is alive & well & living in Raleigh.

Eyes to Space are from Chapel Hill, and the last time I saw them (which was, admittedly, several years ago), they were kinda like They Might Be Giants if TMBG were a prog band.

Thursday, March 17
"Stone Roses", The Wusses
Kings, Raleigh

If you attended last year's Kings Cover-Up, then you undoubtedly recall The Wusses, who made their debut in the guise of The Little River Band. What you probably don't know is that the concept of a 70s lite-rock cover band had been percolating in the minds of Razzle drummer Dave Bjorkback, bassist Dave Cantwell, and guitarist Bob Wall for quite some time before that. They already had a real name, in fact: The Wusses. Tonight marks the official debut of the Wusses-as-Wusses, and while they'll still be playing all your Little River Band faves, they've also added at least a half-dozen new 70s lite-rock faves, most of them *not* penned or performed by TLRB. The Future Starts Now.

Friday, March 18
Countdown Quartet [http://www.countdownq.com/], The Young Idea [http://www.theyoungidea.com], The Bleeding Hearts [http://www.thebleedinghearts.net/home.html], Snatches of Pink [http://www.snatchesofpink.com/], Kenny Roby's Mercy Filter [http://www.kennyroby.com]
Cat's Cradle, Carrboro

This is a benefit for Independent Animal Rescue, which is (as the name suggests) a kill-free private/non-profit animal rescue/adoption organization, and which is largely the work of one woman, so she/they can use all the support you can muster.

Briefly: Countdown Quartet have been playing New Orleans-style party-jazz/funk for the past decade or so; when they opened for Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings they went over about as well as the Dap-Kings themselves, which is saying something. The Young Idea are young & well-dressed and they make garage-rock with matching Rickenbackers & more attitude than skillz, which is what it's all about. Snatches of Pink wish there was more respect for eyeliner-rock in the Triangle. Kenny Roby has a new album on its way out, and a new band, Mercy Filter, to go with it.

Friday, March 18
Cardiff Giants, Bringerer
Local 506, Chapel Hill

Cardiff Giants are fronted by ex-Zen Frisbee singer Brian Walker, and include, I believe, other ex-ZFers as well as ex-Pipe folks. Izzit the Sound of the 90s, Today? I dunno, I keep missing them, though certainly not intentionally, as the aforementioned Pipe/Zen Frisbee axis was a large part of what I loved about this town 10 years ago.

Bringerer also includes ex-ZF and Pipesters, but doesn't sound anything like either of those bands. Hmm.

Saturday, March 19
Two Ugly People Kissing, Jefferson Satellite, Wolf Anus
Nightlight, Chapel Hill

As so often seems to be the case, lifted straight from the Nightlight website:

What is Two Ugly People Kissing? "In essence it is a one man, erotic, scatalogical, electronic free jazz philosophical investigation complete with real blood, real pain, and real tears. Kind of like Cecil Taylor meets Marlene Dietrich meets Emile Cioran. The performance has all the characteristics of a charming nervous breakdown: delicacy, honesty, violence, acerbic wit and shrieksof anger." I would tell you how Wolf Anus produces his sounds but he wants to keep it a secret. Let me give you a hint: 00101001010100101010010101011110000etc. Jefferson Satellite is not as confrontational as the other two, but it's orbiting way the F out there, somewhere - BUDGET MYSTERY NIGHT. 10PM / $2.

Tuesday, March 22
Cub Country [http://www.cubcountry.com/], Dolorean [http://www.dolorean.com/]
The Library, Chapel Hill

Cub Country make a sort of loping friendly countryindierock that's bumped up a couple of notches by TGOR bassist Jeff Clarke's Telecaster skills.

Dolorean are from the Portland area, but they feature two former local boys, ex-Nine Minute Snooze drummer Ben Nugent and bassist James Adair. Plus they're on Yep Roc, so step on over & say howdy.
