yah, this only runs through Monday. I might do more later, I might not. I have plumbing to do:
Friday, November 5
Kingsbury Manx, The Strugglers [http://www.thestrugglers.org/]
Tyler's Taproom, Carrboro
A million flowers bloom. This show was originally slated for Ooh La
Latte, but things at OLL are up-in-the-air at present, so it was moved
to Tyler's. First band at 11:00. This is in the restaurant/taproom
side, not the Speakeasy, which means smoke-free. Also means that one
of the best selections of draft micro/import beers in Chapel
Hill/Carrboro is at your disposal. Mmmmmm Young's Double Chocolate
Stout.
Plus, of course, you get the Kingsbury Manx & the Strugglers, both of
whom fall somewhere on the "interesting/compelling/great" tangent to
the indie-folk-country-psych curve. Show of the weekend, in fact, as
far as I'm concerned.
Friday, November 5

Cat's Cradle, Carrboro
Friday, November 5
Wrangler Brutes [http://www.wranglerbrutes.com/], des_ark
[http://www.des-ark.org], Midget Marines
Kings, Raleigh
Wrangler Brutes contain ex-members of that whole family of 90s VA
hardcore/weirdo bands like Born Against, Universal Order of
Armageddon, Mens Recovery Project. They're now located in Los Angeles.
Well, I mean, at the moment they're located in a van somewhere near
the eastern seaboard, but they live in LA otherwise.
des_ark you know about. Better catch them while you can; next week
they're playing the Lincoln Theater. Alltel Pavilion 2005 here we
come!
Midget Marines contain ex-members of BeatlesS, Krapper Keeper &
Picasso Trigger.
Saturday, November 6
Jett Rink [http://www.jett-rink.com/], Spectac
[http://www.spectaconline.com/], The Moaners, eNtet
[http://www.umbrellarecordings.com/]
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Has it really been 10 years since Mike Shoffner pulled the big fat
black cable out of the back of the mixer at WXYC, crimped a BNC
connector on the end of it, and jacked it straight into his all-AT
10base2 network? (Oh, the many happy hours I & a lot of other people
spent reading alt.music.chapel-hill in TRN on a monochrome monitor in
what appeared to be a spare closet at XYC, all those years ago . . .)
I still say webcasting is an annoying waste of bandwidth, and will be
until we have some kind of universally-implemented IP Multicast
network in place. But if the networking companies want to solve that
particular problem by throwing billions of dollars of fiber-based
overcapacity at it instead, that's their problem, not mine. In any
case, happy-web-birthday, WXYC.
Oh yeah: this is a party to commemorate the event.
Saturday, November 6
Clang Quartet, Hotel Motel [http://www.hot-mot.com], Roaring Lions of
the Two-fisted Kool
Nightlight, Chapel Hill
I'm told that Roaring Lions is a quote from The Tick, and honestly,
isn't that enough for you to know? Better be, as it's all we've got.
Hotel Motel have recently released their 2nd EP, "You Must Be Hard of
Reading," and it's no less dense and bizarre and rewarding than the
first. Every time I listen to it, though, I wind up with that damn
Steely Dan cover stuck in my head. Is that Hot-Mot's fault, or
Becker/Fagen's?
Clang Quartet involves one man beating on a stunning variety of
objects for Jesus. If you've been wandering around in a funk this
week, quietly (albeit maybe guiltily) cursing the Christians for
throwing the election, please, come talk to Scotty. He'll be happy to
remind you, by virtue of his very existence, that some Christians are
total noise-loving avant-garde freaks whose core set of values is no
different than your own. Not that you should need reminding; the folks
who voted for Bush don't even represent a majority of the Christians
in this country, if my math is correct. But some weeks you need a
little extra nudge in the right direction, and this sure-hell was one
of them.
Saturday, November 6
Patty Hurst Shifter [http://www.pattyhurstshifter.com], The Ex-Lovers
[http://theexlovers.com/], Houston Brothers
[http://www.thehoustonbrothers.com/indexhoustons.html]
Martin Street Music Hall, Raleigh
Saturday, November 6
The 45s, The Spinns [http://www.thespinns.freeservers.com/]
The Cave, Chapel Hill
I'm always tempted to make troglodyte references when talking about
the Spinns, primarily in reference to their sort-of-rudimentary
pounding garage-rock attack, but also, of course, in reference to the
partly-Troggs-tribute spelling of their name. And given their
affection for The Cave, it's just not even necessary to try to resist
the urge.
Forty-Fives are from Atlanta & have a recently-released album on Yep
Roc; I saw them once at the 506 and liked them, in a Nuggetsy kind of
way.
Saturday, November 6
Strange [http://www.thisisstrange.org], The Nein
[http://www.thenein.com/], Menomena [http://www.menomena.com/]
Kings, Raleigh
Strange opened for Mission of Burma a couple of weeks ago, and while
they might not have persuaded many of the old-fogey MoB fans in the
crowd, they turned my crank pretty well, at least. And it wasn't just
Dave Meuller's skintight polyester shirt, either. They boomed and
echoed and droned in all the right places, is all.
