Amid all this speculation about what aspect of the business supports
what, Jason helpfully points to an Inc. magazine article about the
Starlite which lays it out in quick strokes. As far as I can tell,
here's the business plan:
"The side businesses share space with the box office, projection booth,
and concession stand in a squat cinder-block building. In an odd
synergy, each draws customers to the others."
So, can we do away with the idea that one part of the business can be
automatically isolated from the others, especially since no one seems
to know for sure what Grove's balance sheet looks like. The Inc.
article says only that Grove and Kathy Bednarz, "took over the 11-acre
theater in 1987 but struggled to keep box-office receipts apace with
expenses, especially in the winter." Assuming that "expenses" would
include paying themselves, it doesn't follow that the movie theater
doesn't net money. It may very well bring in a little net, just not
enough to live on. Again, we don't know. But I'd be mighty surprised if
they don't count on the monthly cash receipts coming from the drive-in
-- cash is cash. Even with the flea market, without the movie traffic
I'd guess that they'd have to expand both their gun shop and their
video store in order to make up for lost revenue, and that assumes that
they'd have sufficient round-the-week, non-flea-market-day patronage
for those businesses at that location. That's a big assumption,
especially since Grove himself said in the Inc. article that "each
[business] draws customers to the others."
My point is only to say that I don't believe it ought to be assumed you
can separate one of those businesses from all the others. Helping the
drive-in business helps the whole business -- Grove says it himself in
that Inc. article. I write this independent of my feelings about guns,
and gun shops, and gun ownership, and gun violence.

p.s. The 506, as currently configured, would be a shitty bar without
the music.
