I assume you already have plans for tonight, but if you missed the news, there's a show with Liars, Young People (who sounded like a boring Velvet Underground on the songs I downloaded) and Get Hustle (ex-Antioch Arrow) at the Cradle. Promises to be an evening of new-Industrial-drone-prentension, I guess. Or not; somebody go & report back, eh?
One other thing: the film "The Delicate Art of the Rifle" which was shot at NC State in 1995 or so & features ex-Action Patrol frontman David Grant in the lead role, will be screened at 7:00 on Monday the 19th at the NCSU Student Cinema. It's freaking awesome, recasting the Charles Whitman/Texas Tower shooting spree into contemporary Raleigh.
Some of the rest of it:

Chapel Hill Music Festival 2004
[http://www.chapelhillmusicfestival.org/]
various locales, Chapel Hill
This was assembled by a bunch of UNC students. Lot of bands, some of
them local, some of them not.
[http://www.chapelhillmusicfestival.org/?x=music] Schedule here,
complete with links to band websites & whatnot. Honestly, I haven't
seen any of these bands other than The Balance, who're already done
playing as I write this, and I can't even really say that any of the
rest of them have been on the need-to-see list. So you're on yr own.

Kenny Roby
Bynum General Store, Bynum
Kenny Roby used to front a band called Six String Drag, who were for
quite some time the most intriguing exponent of the '90s-era
roots/alt-country movement in the Triangle, due largely to Kenny's
songwriting, his gravelly voice, and his willingness to toss all
manner of influences into the mix, from Elvis Costello & Bruce
Springsteen to the Meters and the Stanley brothers. And Doug Sahm,
always Doug Sahm. Now he's a solo artist, and he's kicking off the
2004 season of shows on the front porch at the Bynum General Store.
Take 15-501 south from Chapel Hill & pay attention to the road signs.
7:00 p.m., pass-the-hat.

Jett Rink [http://www.jett-rink.com/], The Man, Finks
[http://www.psychicrevolution.com/finkssongs.html]
Local 506, Chapel Hill
Hoo boy, Rockshow of the Week. Jett Rink are local
new-wave/surf/badass superstars, complete with long-limbed spazzmo
frontman who'll simulate all manner of nastiness on you & make you
love it. They will rule your world and you'll go willingly.
The Man are Stooges-inspired and fronted by the lustrously pale Kevin
Clark, who has abused himself his whole life in preparation for this
moment.
Finks are from Winston-Salem, and would seem to hold such folks as
Pixies, Feelies and X near-and-dear to their hearts. I myself hold
Finks near-and-dear; they're one of my 10 favorite currently-operating
North Carolina bands.

Jett Rink [http://www.jett-rink.com/], Permanent Darling
[http://www.permanentdarling.com], Wigg Report, Dom Casual
Duke Coffeehouse, Durham
Duke Coffeehouse is once again somewhat in jeopardy; under-utilized
for a year or two, it has draw the attention of the administration,
who would perhaps understandably like to know why that valuable East
Campus real estate isn't fully justifying its existence.
Many of us (too many, probably) at WXDU remember the Good Old Days of
the Coffeehouse, and while we don't necessarily think we can re-create
an era in which Yo La Tengo and the Ruins played the Coffeehouse
(particularly since bookings like those weren't necessarily break-even
propositions), we *do* think it's something of a no-brainer to argue
that Durham needs the Coffeehouse. I mean, there still isn't another
fulltime live-original-music venue in Durham at all, and certainly not
one that's all-ages and BYOB.
So, WXDU booked this show, and will book others if possible. Jett Rink
are spazzily brilliant, all insane synths and slashing new-wave/surf
guitar and attitude. Dom Casual are influenced equally by the Kinks,
the Clash, and Link Wray. Wigg Report are 2/3ds of Rosa Begosa, the
2/3ds who aren't Jon E Walker and thus they're minus the brilliant
rock guitar moves, and plus quiet low-fi folk weirdness.
Saturday, April 17
Audubon Park, ManBand [http://www.manband.us/], Ghost to Falco
[http://www.purevolume.com/GhosttoFalco]
Ace's Basement, Greensboro
ManBand is the rhythm section of that amazing Asheville new-wave band
Piedmont Charisma, plus Matt Gentling, who used to play bass for
Archers of Loaf. Last band I saw him in was called Trackrabbits, and
they were fucking HUGE, so I'm pretty excited about this one.
Audubon Park are Pavementy only in the sense that they have
outstanding pop hooks which they proceed to dismantle and layer with
noise or falling-apartness and/or funny-but-sincere 'oooh oooh's, and
I love them dearly, because of the noise, and because those pop hooks
are utterly outstanding.
Saturday, April 17
Transportation
The Cave, Chapel Hill
Transportation have become a really fugging compelling live band;
they've cut out most of the instrument-switching while still retaining
the eclectism that sees them working all manner of early-70s genres,
from sweet Southern Boogie to weirdo UK glam, into their songwriting.

Sorry About Dresden [http://www.sorryaboutdresden.com], North
Elementary [http://www.northelementary.com], Amish Jihad, The Weather
[http://www.theweatherrocks.com]
Go! Studios Rm. 4, Carrboro
This is a benefit for Go manager Mike Triplett, who was laid low for
several weeks last month by a bout of spinal meningitis which had him
in the hospital & at several points about as sick as one person can
be. Now he has to recover his strength *and* figure out how to pay the
medical bills; your attendance at this should oughta help on both
counts.
Sorry About Dresden are, at this point, practically the Old Men of
local indie-rock; they've been around for so long that I found their
first demo the other day, and it was a *cassette*. That's a joke,
son.
North Elementary are a coupla original members of the Comas, pursuing
that woozy drug-pop muse to ever-more-logical conclusions.
Amish Jihad used to be an instrumetal side-project of the Scaries; now
that the Scaries are No More, they're whatever they are.
The Weather are from Raleigh and they make Raleigh-Rock-with-a-Brain,
which now that I think about it, reminds me a bit of Finger.
