Tobias --

I would highly recomment that CC -- as an organization -- apply/approach/request for support from the Wikimedia Foundation. That would carry more weight than individuals applying.

The Wikimedia Foundation has an open grant funding system, details available here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:PEG

Here are some grant applications for some events/conferences that the Wikimedia Foundation has funded:

Basically, CC will be required to submit a proposal and a volunteer-led committee (with some support staff) will assess the grant application and eventually provide or deny funding. This will probably take 2-4 weeks from the date of submission.

So, if CC (as an org.) is comfortable with this procedure, I would suggest that we take the following steps going forward:

-Have a Skype Call to kick things off. Gather the necessary persons to assist in drafting the grant proposal.
-At the same time, write an official communication to the Wikimedia Foundation's Head of Grants regarding our intent. (To sort of test the waters and gauge whether we'll get a positive response/go-ahead from them).

In some rare cases, the Wikimedia Foundation usually discusses with grantees behind the scenes and then makes an announcement that they'll be funding so-and-so a certain amount of money (without going through the normal grant application process). However, the Wikimedia Foundation has become increasingly transparent and chances are that when we contact them, we'll probably be directed towards submitting an openly available grant application.

I'm willing to offer my help wherever possible.

Kind regards,
A.

Dear Abbas:

thanks for this. This is very very useful. I have captured this opportunity in our google doc (sheet 3): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-5YNxLSjKeTrw5lH7x2Ei16MoNsTDldvA53Sk0kR7Kc/edit#gid=2040223314 Can you tell us a bit more about the process and who long it would aproxiamtely take? Do you think affiliates and community members should apply individually or would this best be done by the RCs and/or CC HQ?

Best,

Tobias

Hi Tobias,

The Wikimedia Foundation might agree to provide travel funding for some participants -- especially given that this year's Summit's focus is aimed at the broader open source movement (and presumably include some attendees from the Wikimedia community). That being said, I could connect you (or the relevant person) with the Wikimedia Grants team and initiate a grant proposal/discussion/way forward.

Regards,
A.

Thanks for this, Kelsey. CC will again provide some funding (numbers still need to be finalised) and affiliates can apply for such funding when registering for the event. This is very similar to how it worked in the past. However, in order to increase the presence of CC Affiliates from Africa, we would love to see some additional local fundraising. And your Prince Claus Travel Fund idea is great. We need more such ideas. In fact I have just hijacked your summit idea google doc (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-5YNxLSjKeTrw5lH7x2Ei16MoNsTDldvA53Sk0kR7Kc/edit#gid=2040223314) and added a third sheet to compile a list of potential funders. All, please add to it if you can.

Best,

Tobias

Thank you, Tobias. I'm sorry it's not clear from your email.

- Will CC be providing travel funding for affiliate teams this year? or is it pending funding?

For funding. I would encourage African Affiliate's under 35 to apply to the Prince Klaus Travel Fund.

They will pay for a flight (not accommodation) for anyone under 35 with a passport from the DAC List.  You need to apply 8 weeks before the event. So anyone who is eligible I would encourage to apply soon.

Dear all:

during last week’s call with other RCs and Ryan Merkley I also asked whether CC would be willing to provide affiliates with support letters, concept papers and other material helpful for engaging in local fund raising (e.g. for travel support to get to the summit or for carrying out one of the ideas/initiatives addressed in my previous email). Please let us know if you intend to do some fund raising and whether you need support material from CC. I am sure that can be very helpful.

In addition, CC is obviously also trying to get together as much money as possible. If you have any ideas of what organisation could be approached - I know that many of you deal with international funding organisations - please drop me a note and I will pass it on to Ryan who is still looking for leads.

Best,

Tobias
