Kia ora koutou
Brian, I fear I've come across as 'more PC than thou' ;) Aroha mai. No
offence was intended. I was not presuming to have the mana to give
CreativeCommons a name in Te Reo myself. I shared those words in Te
Reo in the spirit of collaboration and agile development - 'release
early, release often'. Since it's brought to light the work you've
done on naming, I'm glad I did.
I think it's essential to transcend and include any work that's been
done thus far on the indigenous license project in any future
development, in the spirit of remix and reuse ;) I look forward to
learning more about the indigenous licence work that's been done so
far, and sharing my own perspectives. Thanks to Aroha, I'm now
subscribed to the Conservations Commons list, and following an
in-depth discussion about the complexities of indigenous knowledge,
which I will inform the paper I'm writing.
You're absolutely right that a translation is much better than a
transliteration. 'Te Puna Mātauranga' is a much more lyrical name,
with greater depth of meaning, than 'Te Whare Pukapuka o Aotearoa'
would have been. Your approach was respectful of the integrity of Te
Reo Māori, and at the end of the day, respect is the most important
thing in these matters. Thanks for this, and for all the great work
you have put into CC ANZ.
Ka nui te mihi
Danyl
