Hi Nathan,

When any work is created, it is automatically copyrighted. That's why there is a copyright holder (with a name) and a copyright date.

Just to be clear: nothing is going on outside the scope of copyright -- A copyright holder of a work must explicitly give up his copyright in order to place something in the public domain.

For these reasons, this information is necessary in order to dedicate something into the Public Domain.
