Rob, this was a helpful post. Thx. In addition, I found one article from inside Sun's legal counsel pretty interesting. This lists many of the business reasons sun has considered for open source and the GPL in particular.

The idea that distros are like publications of gathered content is the reverse of an idea I've been pushing to friends in Open Content for a while now. Editorial style and content is the added value that makes it worth paying for (f|F)ree content.

This stance is interesting because it isn't focussing on getting a "more commercial" license or on containing projects within a corporation, but it is very much focussed on providing a compelling value proposition to consumers and making a profit.
