In response to the comparison with freenet, I'm aware that they are using a
hash (and more) as a key type. But I haven't read deep into the technical
stuff, because it will only complicate things. Ted Anderson (who I believe
maintains this list) responded to an email of mine, and pointed out that he
played a major role in a freenet key type. I responded with the MFS handle
formula, and if it was identical to freenet, I assume he would of pointed it
out.

From what I read from the freenet web site (in May), the file name and hash
are used in the key, but the extension and size are not (they are with the
mfs handle).

However, if you guys could tell me if they are using a credit card for a
form of identification, I'd appreciate it. I doubt it, because one of them
would of pointed it out by now. Also, doesn't freenet only encrypt data from
point to point? From what I know (and it aint much), it doesn't permanent
store data in encrypted format.

Its funny how I hold back from reading about freenet, because of legal
reasons. You guys do have a point when you say that intellectual property
issues are a pain in the ass. However, because we are computer specialists,
this is an area of the law that impacts us. Personally, I feel there would
be headaches to deal with regardless what your profession is. I know freenet
is aiming for similar goals, but their approach is different. Unfortunately
the freenet philosophy wont allow us to work together.

Before I got the design to where it is, it was just a hobby, most of the
time spent as thinking about how to overcome the duplication problem. Since
it was a hobby, I never read the engineering details of AFS, or others. I
only learned enough about NFS to maintain it. So now I'm learning of all the
others.

Oh yeah, MFS is also aiming to be a replacement for ICP, but there is no ICP
interface yet in the design (along with may other missing pieces).
