This laptop is supposed to have the same sound chip as TP 770X,
but the latter works as sb (with a small complaint by the driver). Odd.

The 770E (not X) was working well as sb though it kept telling me it was not really sb pro compatible, until the sound became choppy a few days ago. Presumably the sb emulating part went bad.

It works nicely now with cs4232, same parameters as the 600E.
Also very soft without aumix - how does one exit graphical aumix?
I try typing S (save) or Q (quit) but nothing happens.

mpuio and mpuirq are only needed for a midi port.
Someone said they were 'essential'.

dma1=1 dma2=0 (or 2 or 5, maybe anything but 4, used by cascade).
less /proc/dma tells you what is available.
alsa site suggests dma1 and dma2 be 0 1 or 3.

insmod opl3 io=0x380
would probably fix playmidi.

The chip is used in other laptops such as DELL Latitude CP and CPi and other Thinkpads and Aptivas. Some don't let you easily disable Quick Boot (equivalent to setting pnp OS NO) without a BIOS update. Supposedly you will be told there is no such device if Quick Boot is enabled. It was already disabled when sb was working.

There are many suggestions on how to use ALSA sound with snd-cs4236, or snd-cs4232, all complicated. edit modprobe.conf....

It is exciting to have two more working internet radios!!!!
BL as usual is much easier to get working with older hardware.
