rtl8139 onboard PCI card.

BL3.5 goes online with 8139too.o. Only the 'big' kernel will boot and the file system is read-only. I cannot even use lynx on this laptop since I cannot write to /tmp. I can ssh to SDF to use lynx. (Did not try rtl8139.o).

BL2 loads 8139too.o but will not ping the LAN or internet.
There is no longer an rtl8139. 8139cp.o does not find the device.
I can write to files. I hope the driver will work compiled into the kernel as for serial PDAs.

Rather inconvenient to reboot to choose between going online and writing to a file. I had to use puppy linux with kernel 2.6 to download a file.

XP works (it was sold with 2K).

Someone else had a computer where this driver worked with 2.4 then would not work with 2.6, and mentioned that lots of people had similar problems.
And it was a 'crappy card'.

A simple fix is to use a PCMCIA network card instead of the onboard PCI.
