Two older ISA non-pnp soundcards finally working.
Be sure to turn up any volume dial first. May still play
faintly in which case use powered speakers.

CS4232 - assorted Thinkpads and others

insmod soundcore
insmod sound #dmabuf=1
insmod ad1848
insmod uart401
insmod opl3 io=0x388
insmod cs4232 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 #mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=9 (for midi keyboard)

##Also does sbpro 8-bit emulation. timidity sounds awful, mplayer
##does not work but mpg123, playmidi, sox work..

OPL3SA2 (Gateway 2000 200MHz)

insmod soundcore
insmod sound
insmod ad1848
insmod mpu401
insmod opl3sa2 io=0x370 mss_io=0x530 mpu_io=0x330 dma=0 dma2=1 irq=9
mpu_io is optional and probably requires an mpu_irq as wel
insmod opl3

The Gateway has in addition to the usual headphone jack,
a mike in (no onboard mike), line out and line in. Sounds good.
It only took me 5 years to figure this out. Online info is all for ALSA.
I got the settings from Puppy /proc (since the modprobe.conf
ones do not correspond to reality).

Upped to 96MB, the laptop is halfway usable with Puppy if you choose your browser wisely (Seamonkey 1.18 is too memory-intensive because Puppy boots using much of the memory for decorations), but works beautifully with BL2 as an internet radio. Will test it for VOIP.

A 300Mhz Winbook XL has ES1869 sound which works in BL2 as SB16 emulation, perfectly. Puppy will only play 8-bit wav sounds, as SB or ES. The Winbook has trackpad and touchpad. BL2 works with both, puppy with neither. But Puppy is stable, while BL2 freezes up at once or within 30 sec of going into X - any ideas why? I swapped on the Puppy 200MB swap file, ran spinrite on the hard drive and memtest on the memory.

A 266MHz Thinkpad occasionally freezes up while in BL2 but has not done so in Puppy. Why? Is there some way to diagnose such freezes?

Looking for a VOIP laptop and these two might do it. Puppy wastes too much cpu time and memory. 400MHz Mac is known to work (but not laptop).

Will try other thinkpads, a compaq and a dell, 233-400MHz.
