82801BA (ICH2?) sound, works in XP, and with Puppy using ALSA.
(sound is very faint with onboard speakers but usable with external ones)

In BL2 I insmod soundcore, ac97_codec and i810 (which work with another laptop having i810 sound) and mplayer and timidity appear to work but no sound emerges.

Mplayer says: "Can't set audio device /dev/dsp to u8 output, trying s16le" for the first (wav) file, then automatically chooses s16le for the mp3 and ogg files.

In XP, IRQ10 is shared by sound, AMR modem, NIC (Nvidia Geforce), TI Cardbus controller and SMBus controller (what is that)? But I get no complaints about IRQs when inserting modules. In XP IRQ11 is not in use.
Maybe I can specific a different IRQ for i810 module?

A long websearch provided no ideas on how to fix this problem, but revealed that everyone else is using ALSA for this chip. I found a 1999 ALSA howto which assumes you are using modprobe.

Is there a simple way to insert ALSA modules using insmod, rather than setting up /etc/modules.conf and other things? Can ALSA be compiled into a kernel specific to this laptop? 700MHz, post 1999. Plays DVDs nicely with WinDVD, too slow for gxine in Puppy (jerky even at 1GHz), and I would rather use mplayer with BL (but could attempt it with Puppy). Laptops are more suitable for our summer temperatures. Mplayer gives much better control over things like skipping forwards (and no need for a mouse).

Has any BL user tried USB headphones? Would the BL3 'big' kernel support USB sound?
