When starting X and then using xterm in BL35 for a terminal window, I
cannot use the backspace key --- this is the left-pointing arrow on
the upper right of a standard 101-key keyboard.
What is the way to permanently remap this backspace key so that this
functions as intended using X and xterm ??
The solution might very well have been posted in the past, but could
not yet go through all the BasLinux Archives over the last few years
to find this.

Search on xmodmap, which is a small utility included in BL used to remap key functions. I constructed a file that remaps a few keys and then put a line in .xinitrc. SOmeone else had a simpler way to do it.
