The latest version requires for compiling

gcc 2.95 or 3.44 are recommended (I have 2.95.3)
binutils 2.11 (I have 2.12 from Slackware 8.1)
GNU make 3.81 - I have 3.79.1 (make -v) from Slackware 8.1

The rest is optional (a lot of missing dependencies in the linuxpackage version).

Slackware 11.0 has 3.81 in a 500K packages (with docs).

I tried to download it with links2 and instead of a .tgz it tries to download the same file ending in .gz (I added the tback).
143K of binary and a lot of man, doc, info and locale.
tar -zxvf make*.tgz usr/bin/make extracted just the binary.

I first downloaded the source code and tried to make make-3.81 with make-3.79.1 and got a lot of undefined references to ctype_b.
The downloaded make-3.81 also would not make make-3.81.

Steven, can you get this to work?

What else should we upgrade for compiling purposes besides glibc (solibs) and make?

Sindi Keesan
