I've got the system booting from the hd - thanks for the help.

I can also start up the PCMCIA ethernet card and
if I set ifconfig eth0 then I can ping my router and the
other machines in my home. My router serves DHCP
addresses to the machines in my house. How do I
set up BasicLinux to get a DHCP address from my
router?

Type udhcpc
udhcpc is a mini-dhcp client found in busybox
This also sets the router's IP number as the DNS server.

If you know your router's IP number to ping it, and the numbers of other computers on the network, you can just assign one manually with ifconfig.
You can then run pppsetup or edit /etc/resolv.conf to use the router's IP number as DNS server.

Since Basiclinux is not a memory hog, I cannot imagine why you would need any swap file if you have 80MB RAM.
