Xvesa does display in 8-bit color (oddly),
Really? Are you sure you are getting 256 colors?
I suspect you are actually getting just 16 but
the display is so weird that it's hard to tell.
8-bit Xvesa may only be displaying 16 colors, but Opera accepts this.
If I use Xvesa in 4-bit color, Opera refuses to load (bpp=4 in the error message). If Xvesa is 8-bit, Opera loads, with visible menu at top. If I then switch to another console and back the menu goes to black on black.
If I stay in X (no console switching) Opera is quite usable, but faces are blue.
So if you cannot get a regular X server working on a laptop, Xvesa is still worth using in 8-bit color for graphical browsing at 800x600.
It beats having to use IE at the library.

Cheers,
Steven
