I suggest you assign an IP address directly.
For example:
--------------------------
ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.17
--------------------------
That assumes the other computer(s) on the network
also have address(es) in the 192.168.1.x range.
It also assumes there is no other computer using
that address.
Then you should be able to ping another computer
(which will confirm that your cables and other
hardware are OK).
