In BL3, with an older zgv (4.2) and svgalib 1.3.1 (which is buggy, and
crashed so I can't use that vt again without rebooting), 640x480x16
(because Xvesa can't do 8-bit):

zgv 1.5% MEM = 2.9MB
xli - 1.3% + Xvesa 0.8% + xinit 0.2% = 2.3% MEM = 4.4MB

For those trying to run BL3 in 20MB loop file, considering whether to delete X to make a bit more space:

xli 212K
Xvesa 870K
xinit 9k
libX11 585K
TOTAL
1,677K (1.7M)

plus wm and rxvt but you don't need them to view
/usr/X11R6/lib is 6.7MB

Steven's BL3 zgv 4.2 static for the image format libraries (png jpeg tiff):
zgv - 398K
libvgagl.so.1.3.1 - 290K
libvga.so.1.3.1 - 55K
TOTAL
743K (.7M)

The savings in disk space is insignificant (1M) considering only this one program, but 6.7MB if you can manage without X at all (or don't want it because Xvesa won't work on your hardware). You can save also space by deleting man pages (425K). And have room for compiling software.

zgv (or seejpeg or viewjpeg) uses less RAM (1.5MB at low resolutions, probably more at higher ones), which matters on old laptops which have a lot less RAM than disk space.

If you have space and RAM for Opera, X will be happy there.

svgalib should be updated to 1.4.3 using libc5 precompiled at

http://www.svgalib.org/svgalib-1.4.3-bin.tar.gz

in order to work with post-1999 hardware.

The newer zgv 5.9 claims better security when run by 'user' but BL3 does not have a 'user'. I don't want to compile it for libc5. My glibc version might work if you add glibc 2.2.5 or later and libpng12.so.0 and libjpeg.so.62 (from a Slackware package?).
