I tried to use gcc and not egcs so perhaps that is the critical
factor.

Still, I see that some 80% of the 50MB filesystem is already in
use and I donĀ“t know how to un-install packages such as X11 that
I can not use on my ancient laptop.

Neither the default 20MB file system, nor the 50MB "bulked up"
file system appear to have enough free space to load and use
these tools. I tried with binutils, gcc, gmake and libc with the result that both filesystems were depleted.

Did you get the packages from Slackware 4.0 ?
----------------------
binutils.tgz 1.5 mb
egcs.tgz 2.7 mb <-egcs not gcc
gmake.tgz .2 mb
libc.tgz 1.1 mb
linuxinc.tgz 1.5 mb ----------------------
TOTAL 7.0 mb

Even after installation, they fit into 20mb.
Cheers,
Steven
