Downloaded the latest version (with 2.6 support) which is for several
pctel modems including some AMR ones. You specify kernel and chipset
family during compilation. They mention 2.4 and 2.6 but not older
kernels. The driver is from post-2.2 era.

pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-6.tar.gz (rht is the author's initials)

[see previous in thread for the details]

The linmodem HOWTO has a much more complex approach. There is a 2.2.16 binary for deb or rh which might work for 2.2.26 with insmod -f.

http://keesan.freeshell.org/bl/2.4.31/ptserial.o
http://keesan.freeshell.org/bl/2.4.31/README.pctel

insmod pctel
insmod ptserial

See README if this does not work (might need to specify IDs)

I have a PCT789T-C1.
for which these modules are specific.

There are no instructions for making special tty's as for lucent modems.

None in the README but the linmodem site says to

mknod /dev/pctel c 62 79

symlink to /dev/modem or /dev/ttyS15 for convenience (or just enter directly into eznet.conf with pppsetup). One of the linmodem drivers needed to make a ttyS14 which probably could be /dev/LT1 instead (since another ltmodem driver already used LT0).

I have not tested these drivers. I was so excited that they compiled on
the first try in 3 seconds that I wanted to share the news.

And I don't have any free slots unless I remove the ethernet card (or figure out what sound chip I have but I can't find the motherboard name).

There are now also drivers for ESS Conexant/Rockwell Intel/Cirrus 3Com and AC97/AMR (in the short slots, on boards with i810 sound/video/modem). Most of our modems by these makers are NOT supported however.
This PCTel is labelled Aztech. Has a little speaker. Canada.
