I edited /etc/rc and added the line 'insmod vfat' then I rebooted.

Then I performed the following:

mount -t vfat /dev/fd0
ls /fd

This gave me a list of the files but with the short filenames.

umount /fd
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt
ls /mnt

The list of files was now in the longname format.

Very odd....
