I have a 100Mhz and a 266MHz Toshiba laptop. The latter will not insert 2.4.31 wireless modules for at least airo and orinoco cards (unresolved symbols). I also have a Gateway with one partition, containing Win98 and loop BL3.40 that I don't want to risk repartitioning.
I have two non-cardbus working pcmcia wireless cards, Cisco aironet (airo) and Linksys WPC11 ver 3 (ver 4 is cardbus). The former works with kernel 2.2.26, or with kernel 2.4.31 (but not in the 266MHz computer). The latter works with kernel 2.4.31 only (therefore not in the 266MHz computer). The Gateway has only loop linux, 2.2.26 so won't work with the orinoco card either.
I tried wavelan_cs instead of orinoco_cs (where the latter did not work) and it inserted but ping and udhcpc gave me error messages. There is a wavelan2_cs which I don't have compiled, and mwavelan_cs which is said to restore missing functionality (iwconfig, iwspy).
Win98 works with both cards in the 266Mhz, but in the Gateway the software all installs but gets 0 signal (even at the library or a friend's house with wireless). (I should try with the airo card in loop BL3).
Questions:
1. How do I modify the loop linux initfs.gz to work with kernel 2.4.31, so as to try out the orinoco card, which segfaults with 2.2.26, in the Gateway, where I don't have an ext2 partition? Also to use loop linux with USB storage. Also so Lee can use it with his 2.4.19 kernel.
2. How do I compile mwavelan_cs.o (an improved wavelan2_cs.o which should work with iwconfig and iwspy) from the pcmcia source code (used to compile all the pcmcia modules)? Do I unpackage it in the pcmcia directory, and if so, do I make all again or can I make just one module?
Maybe this module will work with 2.2.26 where orinoco segfaults and wavelan inserts but does not work. wvlan_cs did not insert. They are all for the same family of cards. wavelan2_cs was not in the pcmcia package.
3. What might I try to make the 266Mhz work with kernel 2.4.31 and modules without unresolved symbols? Would it help to compile the modules into the kernel?
4. udhcpc works with Steven's 2.2.26 basic kernel or with my large 'smf' 2.4.31 kernel (compiled for use with ipchains). But wants some missing script file with my smaller 'la' (laptop) kernel. What should I change in kernel config for use with UDHCPC?
All but question 3 should have easy answers.
Lots of people had problems with orinoco modules. Seems to depend on your hardware.
