Yeh. The problem is my serial card, which is a dual-port, low-profile
job:

Serial driver version 5.05c (2001-07-08) with HUB-6 MANY_PORTS MULTIPORT
SHARE_
IRQ SERIAL_PCI ISAPNP enabled
ttyS04 at port 0xdc00 (irq = 5) is a 16C950/954

The simplest solution seems to be to get a standard serial card.
