------------------------------

Without matroxfb, this site works fine. I get the Italian sound, and a few seconds later the picture (svga mode, small again).

So matroxfb interfered with the SVGAlib mode and should be avoided (or use X11 with matroxfb). One problem solved.

But mplayer will still not play sound offline - wav, mp3, or ogg.
Opening audio decoder: [pcm] Uncompressed PCM audio decoder....
[Or a similar line for ogg or mp3]
AF_pre: 11025Hz/1ch/u8
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.
Audio: no sound

On the other computer, with the same drivers, it plays all three formats offline. AF_pre: af format: 2 bps, 2 ch, 44100 hz, little endian signed int
AF_pre: 44100Hz 2ch Signed 16-bit (Little-Endian)
AO: [oss] 44100 Hz ....
Building audio filter chain for 44100Hz/2ch/16bit.....
Video: no video
Starting playback

All of this except the no video line is missing on this computer where mplayer sound works in Italian only (but not Russian or Spanish, see below) and not offline.

This is the only computer where I need to specify on the CLI -ao oss (it is not enough to put it into a config file for mplayer).

This card is pnp, the one that works offline is jumpered, but this card worked online yesterday, though occasionally the volume would go way down (but still audible) for a while then back up again. This is a powered sound card and unpowered speakers.

But all the other players work, and so does mplayer at the Italian site (quite loudly). Does mplayer use a different part of the sound card from sox/play, playmidi, and timidity? What audio device do they use?

Picture (small) but still no Spanish or Russian sound at these two.

The Italian sound still works (I checked after the others did not work).

This is a real puzzle. Is there some log file I could look at to see what sound device the Italian site uses?

Why do I have a 268MB /proc/kcore?

The obvious fix would be to replace the sound card (with someone non-AWE since we now have Ron's timidity for MIDI playing) but I want to understand what is happening. Thanks for any ideas or explanations.
