I assure you that the BL1 zgv does not need uClibc.

Perhaps you are using a uClibc version of svgalib
and/or libvgagl (which the BL1 zgv uses). If so,
I suggest you use libc5 versions.

That may explain why it insists on libc.so.0 and libm.so.0.

I recall updating libvga or livgagl to version 1.4.3, which I think David compiled specially, for use with the uclibc zgv that he compiled for the 1-floppy USB-storage linux. He said the older zgv won't work with kernel 2.4.31, which I need to boot to a scsi drive (and for USB storage). So this is probably hopeless, but I can use zgv in BL2. And some X-based viewer in BL3 (xv or if I convert format with netpbm, xli). zgv did work with kernel 2.2.26 (which is not scsi) and I could try some day compiling a scsi 2.2.26, or simply stick to BL2 for photo editing on that computer until there is a USB-storage 2.2.X kernel.

I am impressed that your XF86Config worked where the one I made with xf8config did not (unless I wanted to scroll around in it).

Our next toy is a Dell with onboard video, which can't be worse than a Compaq.

Cheers,
Steven
