qemu -fda freedos.img

It seems to have worked on first glance:

A few lines about Bochs and cirrus-compatible VGA is detected.

Data1 master: QEMU CD-ROM ATAPI-4 CD-Rom/DVD-ROM
Data1 slave: Unknown device

Booting from Floppy...
F1 . . . Dos
Default: F1
F1 . . . Dos
Default: F?

Now everything is frozen up - none of the keys on my keyboard work.

I think the -fda part might be if you have the image on floppy disk.

From the CLI in VT1:

qemu freedos.img (in the directory where it resides)
got me to a C:\>

but the keyboard is not working properly.
space bar = n
number keys at top do nothing
qwert produces 7890-
asdfg gives uiop[
Enter key gives t, shift is c. Ctrl is y tab is 6 caps lock m right Ctrl Home u backspace backspace is 5.

I could figure this out eventually and relabel the keys.

BUT:

In X11 the keyboard works properly (as it did with xdosemu in older versions where dosemu did not work).

C: no files
a: Dir
Drive Not Ready

Trying to mount it after this in linux gives lots of I/O errors in sector 0 and X has crashed (to a blinking cursor) and I had to power off and this computer will only boot once a day.
