I guess you could use something like :
mp3123 `wget -O - http://path/to/m3u/`
The answer was so simple that it eluded me. :)
The m3u file I looked at contained the URL for a .pls file - will this still work?
The stuff inside the `` is run first, giving the url to the mp3,
and then that
is send as an argument to mp3123
Curveball: Not all m3u files have just the URL in them. Some have
extra garbage. However, this should work with most of them.

I have looked for other mp3 players newer than 2000 and found:
mp3blaster (Nov. 2003) - CLI, source or static binary (which might need a later glibc). Binary is 584K or 1.1M depending on the version.
MAD - used in many other players (CLI?)
Zinf 2.2.5 - also does Ogg Vorbis and Shoutcast. GUI. 2MB source
mpg321 -prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mpg321 is one download site.
Get mpg321-0.2.10.tar.gz source (111K) from 2002
Based on MAD, xmms and plaympeg code and billed as a drop-in replacement
for mpg123, which has not been updated since 2000.
I may attempt some day to compile this for BL2, but I am sure David could do it faster. (I still have not gotten to the Matrox kernel).
