You still have poor compatability with the really new (8.0+) Slackware
versions,
due to differences in glibc. I'm not sure how favorably the 7.1 package
features
compare to 4.0. I believe 4.0 is good enough for most here, though.

Yes. You can use the static and glibc versions of Xvesa with BL2, and you can
even install full-blown X. See the file here for details on full-size X:
