Slackware 7.1 is more compatible (but not always) with
current binaries because it runs a glibc2 library.
Slackware 4.0 run a libc5 library which is incompatible
with current binaries. The advantage of libc5 is that
it is much smaller than glibc2.

However, relatively little time elapsed between 4.0 and
7.1 (the big jump in version numbers was a promotional ploy).
For example, both 4.0 and 7.1 provide the same version of GCC.

It is true that some packages in 7.1 will be slightly more
up-to-date, but the gap between 4.0 and 7.1 is far, far
less than the gap between 7.1 and the current Slackware.

Yes, there are full instructions for installing X; however,
it does not come built in (like BL3). You need to install
several packages from Slackware 7.1. BL2 provides a default
config for 640x480x4. Higher resolutions are DIY and quite
complicated (particularly for newbies to xf86config).

Cheers,
Steven
