Compiling a kernel is just about the toughest
test you can do.
It got through the kernel this time but then would not find hard drives when I cold booted again. I can try compiling the kernel again (with the proper sound support this time). Why is compiling the kernel harder than compiling another large program (ghostscript or lynx)?

Do I really need to 'make dep'? It compiled without, after getting stuck on hamradio with (I had deleted the hamradio and some other irrelvant source code). I suppose I ought to compile and THEN delete.
