Slackware 7.1 also has two other versions of gcc
in the /contrib directory: 2.7.2.3 and 2.95.2
I suggest you un-install egcs before installing one
of those.

I believe 2.95 is quite good. It is the default on
Slackware 8.1

If you use one of the gcc packages from Slackware 7.1
then it should work OK with your other Slackware 7.1
stuff.
