Steven, how small did you manage to compile 2.4
when you were experimenting with it?

I don't remember exactly. Slackware has a lowmem 2.4
at 522kb, but it doesn't do networking (doesn't even
do X IIRC). My 2.4 kernel (with similar capabilities
to the BL3 kernel) was closer to 600kb.

That is much smaller than the SW10.0 generic kernel (1.4-1.5MB) so I suppose it does a lot more things which I don't need. If I knew how I would compile an even more basic 2.6.9 kernel - don't need X or networking just to burn a CD and I could include the needed modules in it.

Would it be worth posting your 2.4 kernel in case people really needed it to run certain programs, or wait until some need comes up?

Maybe all I need to compile is one of the cdrom modules. I will try to figure this out. Something needed patching. But I recall last time I tried to compile a module it did not work and things crashed rather badly (but were fixable). Winbond ethernet module.

Has anyone on our list used DOS cdrecord or cdroast? Is so, are they as complicated as the linux versions? I have no idea how I would load a module in DOS - as a driver in config.sys? Would I need scsi emulation and aspi driver?

I hear FreeDOS does not yet have a usable CD-ROM driver.

I discovered that I have been running linux in 64MB RAM on a second computer, also with 256MB RAM installed. Would Ken's program for clearing vectors keep this from happening? The other computer seemed to boot faster once I added mem=256M to the boot batch file. Also, might it fix the problem of Xvesa not working in 8-bit color? Has anyone got Xvesa working with lilo and 8-bit color? Xvesa -listmodes lists 256 color modes which implies they should work.

Cheers,
Steven
