I use Mutt and Pine on both BL1 and BL2, they both use
graphic Links and Zgv but Mutt can download as well as
send mail. I get alot of graphic mail, but only use BL3
on floppies. Would Sylpheed fit?

Mutt is great, but
it is not very intuitive to use

I agree.

If you want to replace the BL mail system, I'd
reccommend pine (from slackware)

I agree that pine is a good CLI option for people
wanting something more powerful for reading/writing
mail. However, I am hoping to get a GUI mail client
(like Sylpheed) working on BL3.

but chose pmail, etc because they were smaller and
had all the features he wanted.

I chose pmail because it was the smallest mail transport
agent I could find. BL2 used mailz as the front-end
for pmail, but I think GySMail (the front-end in BL3)
is better.
