- Subject: [BL] Suggestion for BL3: rxvt
- Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 08:12:06 -0500
Dear folks (and especially Stephen),
I'd like to suggest replacement of the "xterm" in BasicLinux, and
especially with an eye towards BasicLinux3, with "rxvt".
http://www.rxvt.org
I've had very good performance from rxvt, using it on my 386SX-25 IBM
Thinkpad, [BL1.7] where it is noticably quicker than xterm. Here's
some lines from 'top', to show where the difference lies:
SIZE RSS SHARE STAT LIB %CPU %MEM TIME COMMAND
1572 1572 1112 S 0 0.0 14.8 0:01 xterm
608 608 468 S 0 0.0 5.7 0:00 bash
1000 1000 720 S 0 0.0 9.4 0:02 rxvt
As you can see from the "SIZE" column, rxvt is only two-thirds as large
as xterm, while running in memory - with similar reductions in require
disk storage for the binaries & libraries.
So far, rxvt has been readily configurable from the .Xdefaults file,
and I haven't had it crash yet.
Hope this helps folks,
Anthony Albert
