I tested to run MS Word 6.0 for DOS under dosemu in an X Window. This
would probably meet your needs. MS Word 5.5 has been made available
by MS, after a Y2K bug appeared in MS Word 5.0.

Drawback: You will not be able to import or export formatted files
(RTF, HTML, DOC). On the other hand the old MS Word creates tiny
little files with a transparent structure, which can be even edited,
converted, manipulated with a text editor.
